What’s the maximum hours I should work a part-time job?

We don’t want you to have too much on your plate, so we recommend that you only work a certain amount of hours alongside your study, depending on your course.

If you’re a full time undergraduate student, it’s suggested you work no more than 20 hours per week in a part time job. During vacation periods, over 20 hours is fine.

If you’re an international student, have a look at your Visa to see how many hours you are allowed to work in the UK.

If you’re a taught postgraduate student, it’s best not to work more than 20 hours per week until you hand in your dissertation, or your course ends.

If you’re a research postgraduate student, your course runs 52 weeks a year, so it’s recommended you don’t work more than 20 hours per week at any point.

If you’re a postgraduate student with funding or a scholarship, have a look at your terms of funding to find out whether you’re allowed to take on any other work.
