Healthcare

A General Practitioner (GP/Doctor) is your first point of contact for most health issues. You should register with a local GP as soon as you arrive in Leeds—don’t wait until you’re ill!

Most students choose Leeds Student Medical Practice, located near campus. It’s designed for students and offers services like mental health support, sexual health clinics and more. You can register online through the Leeds Student Medical Practice website.

Other GP practices are available across Leeds, but you’ll need to live within their catchment area.

NHS services are free for all UK residents and some international students. If you are from outside the UK and want to know if you can access the NHS you can speak with The Student Visa Advice Service for advice.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies(or chemists) are for minor illnesses like colds, headaches, or allergies. Pharmacists can give advice and sell over-the-counter medicines. They also dispense prescription medications.

NHS 111

If you’re unsure what to do or need help outside GP hours, call NHS 111 or use their online service. They’ll advise you on the best next steps.

Urgent Care (999)

For urgent but non-life-threatening issues (like sprains or minor injuries), you can visit an Urgent Treatment Centre or walk-in clinic however you must call NHS 111 first for advice.

Emergency Care

For emergencies—such as severe chest pain, breathing difficulties, or heavy bleeding—call 999 or go to A&E.

Mental Health Support

Your GP can help with mental health concerns, and there are also university services.

Dental Care

Register with a local dentist early. NHS dental care covers essential treatment, but you can also choose private care if you prefer.

Eye Care

You can receive eye care from you GP. They may recommend you see an optician sometimes this offered as part of the NHS but often you will need to visit a high street optician.

Sexual Health and Pregnancy

If you have concerns about your sexual and reproductive health you can speak to NHS 111, your GP or The Leeds Sexual Health Clinic for support.
