Fire Safety What You Need to Know
From your fire alarm not working at all to it constantly going off, it’s always good to get fire safety worries sorted out.
Here’s a few signs that your fire safety may need to get sorted:
- Fire alarm panel not working or showing errors messages
- Smoke/heat detectors that constantly go off (when no smoke/heat from cooking)
- Smoke/heat detectors that don’t go off when you expect them to e.g. burning toast
- Fire doors that don’t close properly
Let your landlord know if you have fire safety worries in writing. They should respond to you within 24-48 hours, repairs could take a little longer but your landlord has to do an immediate assessment.
If you’ve already contacted your landlord and they haven’t done anything, let us know or contact Environmental Health here.
Fire safety tips (make sure you don’t get a bill if there is a fire)
- Never cover up smoke/heat detectors
- Don’t prop open fire doors
- If there is a problem with alarms going off - report it to the landlord immediately
- Don’t tamper with fire extinguishers or fire blankets
If you live in a house with 5+ housemates
This is called a HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) your landlord has increased fire safety responsibilities, including having an interlinked detectors on each floor (so if one alarm goes off, they all go off), fire doors and a fire escape solution.
If you live in a house with less than 5 people
Your landlord should at least have one smoke alarm on every floor.
