Hi! We are the LGBT+ Society of Leeds University Union, and we work to create a welcoming and liberating space for queer students in Leeds. We need your help to keep the society running and continue to do this!
The positions available are Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Events Officer (x2) and Welfare Officer (x4).

We especially encourage nominations from queer students from marginalised backgrounds, and especially from queer students of colour. To reflect this, one of the positions as welfare officer will be reserved for trans and/or nonbinary people, and two positions will be resrved for people of colour.

I’m thinking of joining the committee - what do I need to do?

You need to be a member of the LGBT+ Society to stand and vote in elections. Membership for the year costs £4 and can be bought here.
Enthusiasm to make Leeds a better place for queer students, and willingness to amplify the voices of queer people – especially the voices of marginalised queer people.
You need to write a short manifesto (150-300 words) about why you want to run for committee, and then stand for election. If you have any access needs or need help in writing this, please contact us. The election process is outlined underneath.

What should I write in my manifesto?

It’s completely up to you! Write a short introduction about who you are, what you study, and why you want to be on committee. You may also want to write about your values, your experiences, and your interests.

How much time will I have to dedicate to society work if I become a committee member?
Depending on what we have planned for the week, committee members would usually spend about 2-4 hours a week doing work for the society.

What kind of work will I be doing?
You will never be asked to do work that you feel that you cannot do, or is beyond what you can do safely. Experienced committee will make sure that anyone without experience is guided in the work they do, and shown how to do it effectively. We understand that people may have circumstances which affect the type or amount of work they can do, and this will all be taken into account if shared to other committee members, and we will share and delegate the work as needed to ensure you feel comfortable and safe.

Usually, committee take turns running coffee hour (putting out tea and coffee, and washing up mugs), we contact venues to book spaces for events, we make digital posters to advertise these events on Instagram and engage, we reply to emails and DMs on our Instagram, we think of cool events to put on, we make and approve expenses, we work alongside the union and the Equality and Liberation exec officer to amplify the voices of queer students – we do lots of different things! You can choose the kind of work that suits you best. If you decide that you prefer a different type of work whilst on committee, this is ok, and we will work with you to make sure you get the most out of your experience.

Your wellbeing is our top priority. We understand the importance of taking breaks and delegating tasks.

We do share work, but Events Officers may focus on organising events, and Welfare Officers may focus on ensuring that members’ wellbeing is looked after. All these roles do the same amount and type of work, although your experiences from your background and communities may shape the vision of welfare for our members. We want to encourage queer POC and people of marginalised genders to run, so that your voices are amplified and represented, and you get the most opportunities from being on committee.

Fill out your personal details and add a short manifesto. Don’t worry about adding a poster or a photo if you prefer not to.

If you are trans and your deadname appears on Engage instead of the name you wish to run in, please contact us immediately at lgbt@luu.group or insta @luulgbtsoc so we can solve this for you.
