Appealing a Disciplinary Decision
If you don’t agree with the disciplinary decision made or the penalty given by the Committee on Student Discipline, you can appeal to the Vice-Chancellor. There is no form to fill out, and there are also no formal grounds for the appeal to meet. Instead you should think about the reasons you feel the decision was incorrect and detail these in an email. You would need to email Student Cases within 20 working days of your disciplinary outcome letter.
You cannot submit new evidence that was withheld earlier in the process, but if there’s something you couldn’t possibly have had access to earlier then you can ask for this to be looked at by the Vice-Chancellor.
If you did not attend your Committee Hearing without ‘good cause’ then you forfeit your right to appeal and the existing penalty would still apply.
The Vice-Chancellor can:
- Agree with the Committee;
- Increase, decrease or vary the penalty;
- Uphold the appeal (disagree with Committee and close the case).
Following this appeal, if you are still unhappy with the result you can complain to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (the OIA).
It’s advisable to contact LUU Advice to talk about taking your case to the Vice-Chancellor or the OIA.
