Making a Complaint to the OIA
The OIA runs a free, independent and impartial scheme to review student complaints. The University of Leeds is a member of this scheme. If you’ve been in a procedure such as an appeal, complaint, or disciplinary you may be able to complain further to the OIA.
You normally need to have completed the internal procedures of the University before you can make a complaint to the OIA. If you receive a final decision from the University, also known as a Completion of Procedures (COP) letter, you have come to the end of the relevant internal processes and there are no further steps you can take internally. Student Cases will include details of the OIA in your COP letter if you’re eligible to complain to them.
It’s important to note that the OIA will mostly be looking at whether the University followed its own internal procedures correctly, more than whether the decision was fair or not (though in some cases this can be part of their decision). They can’t directly overrule the University’s decision, but they can recommend the case be looked at again.
You will have 12 months to complain to the OIA, normally from the date the COP Letter was issued. This is a strict deadline and it’s worth remembering that the longer you wait to complain to the OIA, the more difficult it can become to put things right.
You can find more information about making a complaint to the OIA, what it can and can’t look at and what it can do to put things right on the OIA’s website. You can also contact them on the following details:
