Appealing Plagiarism Penalties

Decisions made by your School

If you are unhappy with either the decision that finds you guilty and/or the penalty the School has set out, you can appeal. You must do this within 10 working days of the date on the outcome letter telling you the School's decision.

The only grounds you can appeal this on are:

a. The School’s decision was unreasonable in the light of the evidence supplied

b. The procedure for the School investigation was deficient in a way that materially prejudiced the case

c. New evidence has emerged that was not available when the School Investigation Meeting was held and there is a good reason why it was not brought to the School’s attention earlier

Disagreeing with the outcome is not in itself a ground for appeal.

This appeal should be in the form of a letter or email addressed to the Committee on Applications, and sent to the Student Cases Team (studentcases@leeds.ac.uk). You will only be asked to appear before the Committee if they decide this.

Decisions made by the Committee on Applications

If you are unhappy with either the findings of the Committee or the penalty they have imposed, you can appeal to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Education.

This would also need to be a letter or email sent to Student Cases via email to the address above within 10 working days.

The only grounds you can appeal this on are:

a. The decision of the Committee on Applications was unreasonable in the light of the evidence supplied

b. The procedure for the Committee on Applications meeting was deficient in a way which materially prejudiced the case

c. New evidence has emerged which was not available when the Committee met and there is a good reason why it was not brought to the Committee’s attention during the meeting to discuss the case

Again, disagreeing with the Committee's outcome is not in itself a ground for appeal.

Student Cases will only pass appeals to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor if they meet the deadline and one or more of the grounds, and if they have relevant supporting evidence.

If you are still unhappy with the outcome

If you receive a Completion of Procedures letter, this means you are at the end of the University's internal procedures. The only way to challenge the decision further is to take it to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) for review.

If you are considering appealing or taking a case to the OIA, come and talk to us at LUU Advice. We can help you decide if you should appeal and can advise on the processes involved.
