To move to the next level of your course, or to graduate, you usually need to pass certain compulsory modules. You also need to get a minimum number of credits:

• You would normally be expected to pass 360 credits for an Honours Degree; 120 in each year.
• You can get an Honours Degree with a minimum of 300 credits. You’ll need at least 100 each year.
• If you pass between 240 and 300 credits you’ll get an Ordinary Degree. For this you need to pass 160 credits in 2nd and 3rd year, with at least 60 of these in your third year.
• If you fail a compulsory module you will normally have to resit and pass it to progress to the next year of your course. If you fail an elective/discovery module, you might be able to progress without it, but you’ll have fewer credits.

It’s advised that you resit any failed assessments so that you gain as many credits as possible. If you fail any more assessments in your next year, you may risk finishing without enough credits to graduate with an Honours degree.

Your degree classification is averaged on the basis of a full credit load so fewer credits will affect your classification.

You can only resit assessments you have failed. You can’t resit to improve your mark in an assessment if you’ve passed, or to improve your final degree classification.
