Hi, my name is Mikayla, and I would really appreciate your vote for the Year 2 Pre-clinical rep. With a strong passion for surgery and a solid foundation in leadership, organisation, and teamwork, I believe I would be a valuable addition to the society.
As someone who is hardworking, outgoing, and determined, I thrive in team settings and stepping up to challenges. As a senior prefect, mentor, and chairperson of the charity committee in sixth form, I developed strong leadership and time management skills. Beyond academics, I am actively involved in cricket and tennis, which have taught me discipline and the importance of teamwork.
During my gap year, I worked as an administrator in a surgical department, which gave me valuable insight into the crucial role non-clinical staff play and the importance of effective communication and organisation in surgical teams.
My experiences extend beyond the UK. While shadowing a general surgeon in Nairobi, I saw that despite limited resources, the surgeon delivered exceptional care, using his clinical expertise to assess and treat patients. This experience highlighted the challenges of practising in under-resourced environments, deepened my appreciation for global health disparities and further motivated my interest in surgery.
I was fortunate to observe several surgeries during my first placement rotation, including a maxillofacial procedure that involved replacing the lower jaw with the fibula. Witnessing the surgeons' skill and precision firsthand was deeply inspiring and strengthened my passion for surgery.
Having attended Cutting Edge events, I value how impactful they are, particularly for pre-clinical students. I would be keen to contribute by helping organise the annual conference, leading teaching sessions, and creating engaging events for early-year students. I am confident that my experience, enthusiasm, and commitment would make me a proactive and reliable member of the team.

Hello, I’m Jack, a current first-year student running for the role of pre-clinical rep. Over the past year, I have demonstrated strong commitment to the society as an active member, attending the majority of the events put on, including the annual conference, suturing series, research series, and more. I am part of the mentorship scheme set up by the society, which has allowed me to gain extensive theatre experience over the past year, for which I am very grateful. From barely being able to unclasp a needle driver in the GIAG session to putting in my first set of sutures on a patient recently, cutting-edge has developed my surgical skill set far beyond the level I thought I would be at so early on. Whilst I still have plenty to learn, I hope to spread my enthusiasm in general around surgery as a pre-clinical rep if elected!

I recently helped out on the 3rd-year mock OSCE and look forward to supporting and putting on teaching sessions dedicated to pre-clinical students who are eager to pursue a surgical career or even for those just looking to get more out of their time on placement. From my own experience and speaking to students in older years, there is a lack of teaching provided before students go on surgical placements. My experience outside of university at work teaching new employees and past tutoring experience will help me to contribute to the high-standard teaching provided by the society. Some of the contacts I have made through the mentorship scheme could help support future workshops put on by the society.

Over the past year I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of the Cutting edge committee and in that time we’ve been able to accomplish a great deal.
I was involved in delivering events such as the shaping the future of surgery conference we delivered in November which was well received and also assisted in the much loved suturing series. This helped me improve skills such as teamwork, clear and effective communication and strong organisational skills. All of which are required to ensure the smooth running of a committee
Being able to observe the senior members of committee and listening to the concerns of my peers, I helped organise and deliver the in person anatomy masterclass for both year 1 and 2 students.
By applying for this role I aim to make an even bigger more positive impact on my cohort.

Hi everyone, my name is Tanushri, and I will be entering Year 2 this September.
Having an initial interest in surgery before joining first year meant that I was quite proactive in engaging in activities which helped to expand my knowledge in this speciality.
Coming from being the 1st Year Representative for MSRC last year, I have some good foundational knowledge of what is required of my role such as working as a team to gather and convey feedback, allowing me to practice both my teamwork and organisational skills. I was also lucky enough to be in Neurosurgery for my first placement rotation. Through this, I learnt more about the role of a surgeon and the organisation within surgery, adding to the theatre exposure and the suturing skills learnt via the 6-week surgical workshop led by Cutting Edge. If elected, I will dedicate myself to the role wholly and be an active member in promoting and organising the fantastic events that Cutting Edge hold. And hopefully, through these events, I can speak to other pre-clinical students about their interest in surgery and teach them some of the knowledge I’ve learnt so far.
