Hi, my name is Sarah (a 2nd year Music student) and I’ve had the privilege of being the Departmental Representative for LUUMS this year. LUUMS has played a significant part in making me feel at home here at uni. As well as being Departmental Rep this year, I have also been the Sinfonia conductor and a production assistant on the LUUMS 100 committee. Being on committee this year has been extremely rewarding which is why I am running to be your secretary next year.

My role as the Departmental Representative for LUUMS has improved my ability to represent students in a professional capacity and to communicate important information between students, staff and the committee about workshops and talks. Because of this, I have learnt how to balance the responsibilities of departmental, my course, Sinfonia conductor and being a LUUMS 100 production assistant. Furthermore, it has taught me how to ensure that all information is accurately recorded and shared between everyone. This directly relates to the role of secretary regarding the maintenance of written records and any society documentation.

Additionally, working as the Sinfonia conductor, I regularly co-ordinate rehearsals and communicate the announcements from main exec to the musicians in the orchestra. I also play a part in making sure that all our musicians in the orchestra and the committee members are well prepared and informed regarding Sinfonia. This role has taught me the importance of clear organisation, attention to detail and the importance of communication all of which are essential for producing minutes from the meeting, keeping accurate records and ensuring meetings run smoothly from the secretary’s end.

Furthermore, working as a LUUMS 100 production assistant has given me valuable experience in the admin side of a society, the importance of teamwork and how to handle logistics in a fast-paced and stressful environment. Supporting this large-scale production taught me to have strong time management, organisational skills and the importance of being able to keep track of important documentation. These skills are easily transferable to the role of secretary. I would like to use these skills to increase the LUUMS archives and to make sure the jumper order is done on time.

I would love the opportunity to contribute more to LUUMS as the secretary and help ensure the society continues to run efficiently whilst supporting its members and activities. Thank you for considering me to be your secretary.
