General information
What does being a LeedsHack committee member mean?
LeedsHack committee are a subsection of the general CompSoc committee specifically responsible for organising and running our annual hackathon, which had its first iteration last year. It is a 24 hour in-person event where participants design and create an innovative technical project, which they can enter into challenges set by sponsors as well as an overarching theme challenge. Last year’s event was extremely successful, with over 200 signups for 110 places, and we received glowing feedback from attendees and sponsors, so the bar is high! If you were unable to attend, we recommend you look at our Instagram, LinkedIn and website.
What skills are required?
Some skills are role-specific and you can find those in the role descriptions, but general skills that all committee will need include:
- An understanding or willingness to learn about student run Hackathons format! Previous organiser or attendee experience is definitely a bonus too.
- Problem solving - things don’t go the way you’d expect a lot so it’s important that you’re able to think of good alternatives!
- Professional communication - you will be working with important people who have the potential to give us a lot of money and with fellow committee members.
- Responsible and proactive - you need to be the type of person that can think of things they need to do without being told.
- High level of organisation - you need to be consistently organised as there will be continuous deadlines to meet.
- Attention to detail - you need to be meticulous in your planning for everything to run smoothly and avoid nasty surprises on the day.
What is the time commitment involved?
Organising LeedsHack is a substantial time commitment due to the number of different parties involved - communicating with sponsors, university staff, catering companies and other organisations that are involved involves months of emails, meetings, etc. Alongside all this communication there’s a lot of careful planning and decision making to be done internally.
