Hey everyone! I'm running for CRASHSoc President because I’ve been fully involved with the society since it started last year and I want to take it even further next year- building on our huge success this year (thanks to the amazing committee).

This year I was the Year 4 Rep and did everything I could to grow CRASHSoc:

- I helped organise, promote, and teach at our sessions (like the RRAPID A–E masterclasses).

- I organised two extra CrashSoc events- one involving an EM ST6 doctor to deliver a talk on how to practically get into emergency medicine early — with things like how to find QIPs, what to focus on, and how to stand out when applying for training.

- I’ve used my own networks with EM consultants, registrats, paramedics and nurses across major trauma centres to get people involved with CRASHSoc teaching — and there’s more to come.

- Outside of uni, I work in events medicine — I’ve been a medical responder since second year, treating real emergencies at places like sold-out Man United football matches and stadium concerts. I’ve done BLS, triage, and learned actual pre-hospital skills working at events with 70,000+ people.

- One of the things I’m proudest of this year:
In April, I organised a heavily discounted FREC3 qualification (40-hour first aid course) for 15 Leeds med students — took it from £400 to £100, and reduced it from 5 days to 3. Because of that, they are now working as medical responders — gaining paid experience in emergency care while still at med school. 5 of those students are already booked for the Leeds Marathon this month!


(I’m also doing a three-part EM research project focused on shoulder reductions in pre-hospital medicine, which I’m aiming to get published this summer.)

What I’ll Do If I’m President:

- Continue the core teaching: RRAPIDS masterclasses, interpretations, and the mock OSCE and conference we’ve been planning.

- Organise an EM CV building session including guidance on QIPs and audits in a taster week

- Ask local EM / pre-hospital consultants and eager committee members to run SIM case nights, some might include:
Cardiac arrest
Sepsis + escalation
Paeds convulsions/ Seizures

Use SIM suites if possible, or even clinical skills rooms with mannequins and role play.

- Run a CRASHSoc promo day during APL — bake sale, pen torch giveaways, and a signup drive to boost our mailing list and get new students involved.

- Collaborate with Restart the Heart and organise a day of practical BLS + airway skills (chest compressions, BVM use) — because honestly, even in Year 4, we all need more time with that kit.

- Push for more FREC3 courses for Leeds students, so more people can gain pre-hospital qualifications, experience, and paid shifts.

- Collab with Wilderness Medicine Soc- to run some trauma-focused sessions with equipment e.g. how to deal with catastrophic bleeding

- Bring in EM consultants and Leeds alumni I’ve already spoken to, to run teaching sessions, career Q&As, and SIMs.

Above all — I’m not here to gatekeep. I want more students to get involved in EM and pre-hospital care, because I know I had no idea myself. I can make sure Leeds medical students get the same access, training and opportunities that I did, and get more stuck in.

Hi, I'm Verity! I'm a 4th year student returning after completing an intercalation in urgent and emergency care. I am extremely enthusiastic about emergency care having been in event medicine for over 5 years - I've seen most of what emergency medicine can throw at you. From triaging hundreds of patients and leading the medical response to the main crowd at Tramlines festival, Bronze staffing the finish line of the world's biggest half marathon (Great North Run), and covering the world's biggest marathon finish line (London 2025). I've responded to airway burns, seizures, respiratory arrests, and major trauma patients pre-hospitally. During this time I have worked with countless HCPs including HEMS doctors, advanced paramedics and A&E nurses meaning I have a lot of good connections I can bring to the society.

I am just finishing up a year of a degree focused on emergency and urgent care, based at Manchester Royal Infirmary, which is an MTC. Over the year I have been involved in the care of hundreds of A&E patients from chest pains, fractures and needle sticks, up to severe major trauma patients from RTC's, stabbings and other accidents. During this, I have been working on a quality improvement project in pain relief for minors A&E patients, and completing a research project in simulation debriefing for healthcare students - meaning I have a lot of knowledge about teaching and simulation.

Alongside this, I have also taught tens of first aid sessions to hundreds of members of the general public and trained first aiders, and attended emergency and pre-hospital medicine conferences and exams across England and Scotland. I spent 3 years on the St John Ambulance Society committee in charge of training, during which time we won multiple awards. Along with organising weekends away and socials which are something I'd like to bring to CRASHsoc. I also was the PALS Social Media lead for a year meaning I have good connections with a wide range of medical students and know how to advertise events.

I am really excited to get involved in the society and bring what I've learnt from my intercalation to the group. Some of the ways I would like to grow the society are:
- Completing fundraising to raise money for local charities, such as the air ambulance, and to buy kit for the society to enhance the teaching available, such as Kendrick splints and airway models.
- Work with other societies, such as Wilderness medics, and other universities, such as Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle and Liverpool who I have connections with, to put on networking and simulation events to enhance knowledge.
- Run an accredited conference day covering a variety of emergency topics along with practical advice on how to aim for a career in emergency and pre-hospital medicine (as I know it can be far too confusing)
- Put on simulation events and mock OSCEs to support those interested in emergency, along with the wider student cohort. To improve general student's skills, and their awareness of the society and career path.

Overall, I am very enthusiastic and organised and would love the opportunity to bring that to this society as it finds its feet after an incredible first year. I would also be extremely excited to introduce many new and older medics to the fantastic world of emergency medicine as the skills and knowledge complement every speciality and emergency staff are often some of the most friendly and invested you can find.
