I have a keen interest in surgery and want to make the most of the opportunities that being part of a society like Cutting Edge can offer.
I have see the success that Cutting Edge has had in both the teaching sessions it has lead and the conferences it has held. I would like to continue this trend as Skills & Education Coordinator alongside Aimee Green.
Our ideas include:
- RRAPIDS teaching sessions on common surgical emergencies with interactive stations
- Portfolio teaching on core conditions from a variety of speciality surgeons with certificates awarded
- Surgical league featuring team based exercises such as case management and diagnosis

Alongside these ideas I am committed to being an active member of this society and supporting all the events it puts on through the year. I want to create a welcoming space where all students can come to nurture their interests in surgery as a career and learn more about their options.

With my previous experience as treasurer in A2M I know how important it is to be a team player and ensure everyone is able to get involved in events to get the most out of a society. We have also collaborated with Cutting Edge before so I have an understanding of what goes into the background of a surgical event.
I feel I am motivated to put my best into this role and am dedicated to making this society the best it can be.

Hi everyone, my name is Oscar, and I am a current 3rd year. Next year I will be intercalating in clinical anatomy, and I am excited to put myself forward for skills and education co-ordinator! I have been inspired by attending a variety of events run by the society this year and feel I will be a valued addition to the committee by offering fresh ideas and perspectives.

The suturing series is a cornerstone of the society and is a huge success every year for a reason. Having attended every session, I understand the organization and logistics involved. Through my placements this year, along with attending cutting-edge surgical events, I have made sound connections with surgeons. I believe this combination positions me perfectly to not only maintain the legacy of the series' excellence, but also explore exciting improvements.

I also want to implement further unique surgical experiences for students. This year’s laparoscopic experience was a great example of this and something I feel needs to be more prominent. My vision focusses on increasing unique events like this more regularly next year to offer exposure to diverse surgical experiences students may not encounter on placement, to help strengthen their portfolios for the future.

Whilst opportunities like this are vital, I also recognise the core skills are a priority as medical students. I will collaborate with other members of the committee to ensure the implementation of genuinely useful sessions targeted at each year. I have the clinical experience of 3rd year to able to target sessions at clinical years such as OSCEs and clinical skills. However, I also have the privilege of studying many pre-clinical concepts in my intercalated degree to further offer useful revision and learning sessions to the earlier years of medicine

My commitment to the society is absolute. If elected, I would strive to be an active member of the committee and readily assist at events beyond role. I take pride in my organizational skills and my work ethic which would undoubtedly maintain and elevate this already fantastic society.

Having a keen passion for a career in surgery as well as a genuine enjoyment for education with interactivity, I would be a dedicated and active skills and education officer for Cutting Edge.

I am committed to ensuring the success of Cutting Edge’s educational events and highly regarded suturing series with a strong focus on coordination and organisation to deliver the best experiences to students.

Along with fellow nominee Grace Alvis, our ideas for the next academic year of Cutting Edge include:

- RRAPIDs teaching series on common surgical emergencies with interactive role play
- Portfolio teaching on core conditions with a variety of professionals from different surgical specialities with certificates awarded
- Surgical competition league featuring team based exercises e.g case diagnosis and management, speed surgical draping

Alongside these ideas, I am committed to constantly evolving my ideas in future educational and skills events based on what students would benefit the most from. With experience as a PALS2 Co-Lead, A2M outreach officer, and events coordinator for EndoSoc, I feel I have the appropriate experience and motivation required to successfully fulfil this role.

It would be an absolute pleasure to be nominated for this role, and I pledge to consistently deliver interactive educational events for students with creativity and passion.

Hello everyone! My name is Abi, and I am a second-year student. I am thrilled to put myself forward for skills and education coordinator.

It is no secret that Cutting Edge is famous for its high-quality teaching. I intend to preserve and further enhance this reputation. If elected, I aim to empower members with confidence in basic surgical skills, such as suturing and scrubbing-in. Additionally, I intend to dedicate time to sessions for practising key clinical skills and examinations to allow members to make the most of their placements. Also, the surgical portfolio is a daunting prospect that I wish to deconstruct by running sessions that guide members through the critical components.

Further, I recognise that surgery is a rapidly advancing space. I intend to ensure our members are equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of surgical practice by introducing more AI and technology-based sessions, like this year’s laparoscopic surgery session.

As an active member of Cutting Edge, regularly attending society events in addition to national teaching sessions online and at conferences, I have gained insight into the foundations of successful teaching and have formed solid connections with several surgeons and their teams. I am a dedicated and highly organised individual with experience in education, having taught CPR to the public, and team co-ordination, as the director’s assistant at an international summer camp. I hope to use this insight, alongside effective collaboration with other members of the society, to foster an environment where learning is exciting, accessible, and rewarding for all members.

Hi everyone, my name is Katherine and I would like to be one of your Skills and Education Coordinators!

Over the last two years I have enjoyed being an active member of Cutting Edge’s Committee, working first as a Pre-clinical rep and later, as Secretary. During this time I have gained experience in organising and running the vast range of events Cutting Edge offers, from our conferences and suturing series to our revision sessions led by clinicians. I have also established contacts with key surgeons involved with Cutting Edge and have demonstrated the management skills required to not only run a high-quality event, but also help run the whole society – ensuring smooth communication between the committee and with our members, liaising with LUU, creating room bookings, keeping meeting minutes and more in my role as Secretary.

My success within event organizing can be seen through how the 4-week anatomy revision session I organized in collaboration with my fellow pre-clinical rep was awarded ‘Best Virtual Event’ at the 2023 Worsley Awards. I also have experience of attending surgical conferences including BSG Live and the ICSM International Trauma Conference, which have allowed me to meet Surgeons from across the country and develop ideas for new, innovative events Cutting Edge could run.

As your Skills and Education Coordinator, I intend to use this knowledge to ensure Cutting Edge continues to deliver excellent events that bolster your application, providing you with crucial opportunities and confidence about going into a surgical career.
Some of my aims coming into this role include working to:

- Continue our well-regarded 6-week suturing series led by current surgeons and surgical trainees, working to recruit more surgeons to provide an even better experience.

- Organise further events providing support and advice from current Surgeons about how to build a successful portfolio alongside more CV workshops with opportunities to receive feedback.

- Run more interactive case-based workshops and role-play scenarios to help students practice key skills such as AtoE assessments/RRAPIDS.

- Run research-focused events that explore how to get involved in research, including talks from surgeons currently conducting exciting research in Leeds – for example, the Sunflower Study. Also setting up a journal club to give students the chance to develop their analytical skills and even have the opportunity to choose and discuss a paper for themselves – which will look great on CVs.

- Ensure the popular Year 3 and 4 MOSCEs return. I have previously volunteered and assisted at these events and have seen firsthand how useful they are for our members.

- Bring back further laparoscopy events following the success of our initial session this year, with more complex skills and procedures being taught.

Having worked as an MSRC Year Rep for the last two years I have extensive experience in collecting and acting on feedback and I look forward to using yours to continue to develop Cutting Edge’s events, making them more engaging, informative and targeted towards what is most beneficial for YOU!
