Conference Director
The conference director plays a crucial role in the society and requires an individual with experience of planning events. With the support and guidance of the Treasurer, the key responsibility of Conference Director will be to help organise and promote the conferences that Cutting Edge deliver. You will play a central role in organising, contacting surgeons and promoting the conferences. Experience of attending surgical conferences would be useful. The conferences focus on subjects such as careers, surgical skills, diversity and inclusion.

My keen interest currently lies in General Surgery, driven by its diverse and challenging cases, along with the chance to swiftly make a significant impact on patients' lives through surgical interventions. I have been an active member of cutting edge since the past year having attended several of its conferences (Orthopaedic and trauma, general surgery talks) and suturing workshops. Through these events, I have witnessed firsthand the society’s dedication in creating awareness and bridging the gap in medical education and career exploration thus I would love to be part of such an impactful community.
As a former head girl in A Level and O'Levels, I have honed my skills in organising events and conferences, overseeing logistics and ensuring seamless execution. I have successfully led teams to coordinate various initiatives, demonstrating my ability to delegate tasks effectively and foster collaboration among team members. Moreover, after attending several conferences in London and Glasgow, I can implement what I have seen in these conferences to enhance them.
Through interactions with numerous surgeons facilitated by Cutting Edge conferences and my research in colorectal pathology and vascular surgery, I have cultivated a robust network of professionals who can contribute valuable insights to our conferences. My adept communication skills, honed through seeking research supervisors and being PALS1 Co-Lead, will enable me to effectively engage and persuade surgeons to participate as speakers.
My focus this year would be to diversify the set of surgeons so that all the specialities are covered and students get an insight of everything and can make their mind accordingly. I also propose dedicating specific sessions and workshops to address topics such as cultural competency, unconscious bias, and gender equity in surgery, especially women in surgery. By fostering a more inclusive environment, we can empower underrepresented groups and promote equity within the surgical field
Recognizing the importance of research in surgical practice, I aim to host collaborative poster presentation conferences. These events will provide students with the opportunity to showcase their involvement in any surgical-related research projects, offering valuable experience in presenting and helping to alleviate any apprehension they may feel in similar situations in the future.
I hope I have convinced you by now. Thank you so much for reading and voting.

I understand the commitment required for this role and the need for an organised individual to undertake this task. As an active member in my church youth group, I have honed my skills in planning and organising events and in catering to the needs of my team in order to provide the best possible service we can provide. I have also gained skills in communication and networking while collaborating with other regional youth groups to organise and oversee big events.
I have really enjoyed being an active member of the society so far; having been to many of the talks and conferences that cutting edge have held, I appreciated the opportunities to speak to leading surgeons in their fields and gain their insight into a career in surgery. I, myself, have benefitted from the conferences I went to and was inspired to work harder and more fervently to pursue surgery which is why I believe in the scale of impact our society can make with well-delivered talks/conferences aimed to inspire our members.
If elected, my vision is to create an enriching and dynamic experience for all attendees. I believe in curating a diverse range of speakers and topics that reflect the breadth and depth of modern surgical practice. From ground-breaking research to innovative techniques, our conferences will serve as a platform for learning, networking, and professional growth while inspiring the next generation of surgeons. I am also passionate about educating our members on preparing for applications in the future by covering topics such as: portfolios, research as a medical student, and (in collaboration with specialty reps) would love to arrange application-based talks specific for each specialty.
Furthermore, I am committed to ensuring inclusivity and accessibility within our society. I will work to accommodate the specific needs of our members, regardless of background or experience level. By fostering an environment of openness and respect, we can collectively strive towards excellence in surgical education.
I am eager to serve you and our society with attentiveness and enthusiasm. Thank you for considering me for the position of Conference Director.

My journey in medicine has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a deep-seated curiosity about the multifaceted world of surgery. While I am still exploring my interests, my enthusiasm for learning and discovery knows no bounds. I am eager to immerse myself in diverse surgical disciplines, seeking out opportunities to expand my horizons and make meaningful contributions to the field.
My involvement with Cutting Edge has been instrumental in shaping my aspirations and fostering connections within the surgical community. As Conference Director, I am committed to curating enriching experiences that cater to the diverse interests and aspirations of our members. I envision conferences that serve as vibrant platforms for learning, networking, and inspiration, where students can explore their passions and cultivate a deeper understanding of the surgical landscape.
My transition into my third year presents an exciting opportunity to deepen my engagement with Cutting Edge and contribute to its continued success. With a spirit of enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence, I am eager to collaborate with fellow students and stakeholders to elevate our conference offerings and empower the next generation of surgical leaders.

As part of Cutting Edge, I have had the opportunity to attend several specialist surgical conferences, including trauma and orthopaedics, and academic surgery. I recently helped to run the logistics of the EDI conference and CV workshop, this involved helping to organise food and doing the register for attendance and certificates. As Conference Director, I would have the opportunity to continue to represent the society at these conferences.
I have previous leadership experience as Outreach Officer for Cutting Edge, which has involved leading a team to encourage medicine and surgery in nearby schools, in the form of interactive presentations and a suturing workshop. We have gained positive feedback from both the schools’ administrative team and the students. I believe I can use these organisation skills and public speaking experience in the role as Conference Director. I have also been secretary of St John Ambulance for 2 years with involved leading regular committee meetings and dealing with any disagreements among members. Communication is a big part of this, ensuring everyone is available for the meetings and that deadlines are being met. I have also developed my skills in organising events for large groups of students, with our St John Ambulance GIAG drawing groups of 50 students.
This year my aim is to run a national conference, which will be brilliant for the students as well as the future of the society. I believe I have the necessary connections to run an event on this scale due to my current involvement in 2 surgery-based research projects, one of which I am presenting at the Annual Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) conference in July. This involves working with a team of researchers based in surgery who would be keen to speak at our conference.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this society so far and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in the future.
