Being President of Femsoc is an exciting role that allows you to lead the society in your own direction.
The role requires someone who is able to lead and motivate a team, be comfortable with public speaking, have an overall aim for the society for the year and someone with original and creative ideas.
Being President over the past year was an incredible opportunity to use my creative ideas to provide a safe space for Feminists to unite together. Starting the first semester with ambitious weekly sessions was a challenge I enjoyed rising to, finding great strength in myself to hold the discussion that mattered most to me. Having the decisive role was great for encouraging my committee to pursue their passions for the society, such as providing fun and creative spaces like 'Being a Woman is an Art' and Drink and Draw. This is alongside encouraging to use the society as a platform to evoke significant change, like creating a safe space to talk about our anxieties of the 'Spiking Through Injection' news, informing how to make a complaint if experienced assault at the university and pushing for Leeds Student Medical Practice to prioritize women's health issues. Hopefully this overview of our years actions have given enough insight to any potential candidates, as to the kind of work that can be made with the society.
You will also need to be confident in completing more organisational aspects key to the society, such as filling out GIAG forms or running the yearly AGM. You are the face of the committee so it is key to be prepared in making connections and communicating within and outside the society in a friendly manner.
Though being the head of society is obviously daunting, you will always be supported by the committee. With all that may seem scary, once you overcome them you will feel proud in what you can achieve!
