The Political and Campaigning Officer position is integral to working with the Fundraising Campaigning Officer to help Femsoc fulfill its purpose to promote significant change! It is very exciting new position formed this year as a way for the committee to have the most strength in making political action. You can decide on what issues the society should campaign, organises events (including protests) around these issues and meets with key decision-makers to negotiate. Excellent for someone with a passion for a specific feminist issue that we can campaign on and the energy to run events around it.
This role is great if you want to use the societies resources to give back to the community. It is great to have someone that is creative in coming up with campaigning activities as well as someone that is keen in attending meetings that organise potential action for the Leeds Community such as Reclaim the Night.
Political Campaign officer also have significant involvement in Lead Luu, an important political event for the union to decide how it will be shaped by student representatives. Political campaigns officer are essential to organise who Femsoc will endorse to support the candidate who is most in keeping with our values. This year this was done by arranging a candidate debate with other feminist societies to make this decision.
Other political action that has been made within the union by the Fundraising and Politcal Campaign officers, include pushing for change in Leeds Student Medical Practice policies to focus more on female health issues. They have also been making major progress for the Union to take more action for female safety such as pushing them to stop endorsing Amber Cars as a 'safe' taxi company (who have proven over the years to not be the case). As policies take years to visibly change, it is important for future candidates to monitor this and hold policy makers accountable if our initiatives haven't been achieved.
It is important that the Political Campaign Officer is aware of current affairs in and outside Leeds and has a real fire to promote significant change. It is key for the officer to also be aware of discussions occurring amongst the members within the society, being the first person to organise any action that members are motivated to start. If you are communicative, passionate and resourceful then apply today!
