My name is Safia, 1st year student for International Relations, and I’m running for the position of Secretary in this society. I was drawn to this position within our esteemed society due to its integral nature in the smooth-running of our society as well as wanting to do my part in maintaining our society, Leeds Model United Nations, and helping it to run successfully for another year, and, if elected, am committed to ensuring our society continues to run as smoothly as possible, communications between society members, committee members, and external organisations as streamlined and efficient as possible to provide the best experience for all.
I believe that what makes me qualified for this position are my skills in communication, collaboration, and project management, all suited for the position of Secretary, and skills I would make use of whilst working on the committee, ensuring the smooth-running of our society.
I gained, refined, and honed these skills over a two-year period whilst working alongside my peers and the Citizens UK organisation to campaign for youth mental health support in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually presenting our campaign to the city council, calling on them to provide support. In this role, I was responsible for not only creating the solutions, but presenting to the city council, gathering information, conducting student polls, speaking to various students about their experiences during lockdown, quarantine, how they felt during the entire pandemic, difficulties they faced, how they adjusted to being back in school, their grief regarding any losses they may have had to endure during the pandemic and more, as well as participating in countless meetings discussing these problems and their impacts on the youth, staying on top of all this whilst managing my many other responsibilities. I was also responsible for ensuring communication between all parties remained as streamlined and efficient as possible, ensuring the dissemination of information was quick, yet also detailed, crucial since new significant information that would lead to a change in strategy could come out at any moment.
My experience in communication, project management, and collaboration would allow me to efficiently and effectively manage the various responsibilities and duties I would have whilst working as a Secretary for the Leeds Model United Nations society, specifically through the use of emails and social media. All of these skills and experience would allow me to ensure that the dissemination of information was efficient, and of a high standard. This would ensure communications are conveyed in a timely manner, so all parties are easily able to stay up to date on important information, as well as ensuring the smooth running of the society’s social media, so that, once more, important information can quickly be delivered to society members, ensure the committee can quickly relay information to others, but, to also present a social media page which could intrigue students interested in joining our society. My skills, experiences, and specific interest in this society are what have led to me running for this position, and why I believe I am qualified.
I promise that as Secretary, I will ensure that communications, messages, and information that must be disseminated between committee members, society members, and external organisations is relayed in a timely manner, as well as being informative, so that our society continues to run smoothly, and to maintain our society’s top standards, ensuring it remains one of the top societies at the University of Leeds.
