Hi, my name is Mahi and I’m applying for the role of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Representative on MSRC.

Being the first in my family to enter university I understand it can be difficult to know who to reach out to and discuss any concerns and it can feel quite lonely not knowing anyone but I will be dedicated to raising all of your issues with the faculty and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

As an enthusiastic individual with a strong work ethic, I would like to specifically tackle issues with discrimination and unfair treatment on placements such as gender, race and religious beliefs. It can be daunting to report inappropriate behaviours of senior members of staff and many students are unsure of how to approach this situation if it occurs. I am also aware there is worry that complaining will have adverse effects on their current placement so as EDI rep, I am hoping to promote students to report this discriminatory behaviour to prevent future occurrences.

Medical school makes up a large proportion of our lives, but for many of us so is our religion. Unfortunately, sometimes these two things can clash. For example, it can be difficult to plan to celebrate Eid or Diwali with friends or family with a busy schedule or perhaps current practices may not be compatible with your religious beliefs or lifestyle choices. I will liaise with the faculty and the committee to ensure we accommodate this.

I am eager to contribute my interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills to pursue my passion for creating a safe space for all students. By addressing discrimination and unfair treatment on placement, particularly in relation to gender, race and religious beliefs I hope to create an inclusive environment for everyone. I aim to empower students and speak out on behalf of students who are struggling to navigate challenging circumstances. I will actively work to ensure diverse cultural and religious practices are accommodated in the medical school.

Hello! I’m Shaan, currently a 2nd year medical student, with a history of serving on EDI committees in educational settings.

I strongly believe that EDI needs emphasis in medical education to ensure the next generation of healthcare professionals are empathetic to diverse patient experiences and students feel valued, enhancing overall well-being and mental health

In past EDI centred roles I have mitigated conflicts surrounding gender identity, sexuality, gender, disability and ethnicity; I was able to then successfully implement advice from feedback into the School to promote inclusion.

Examples include:
- tailored displays to support those with red-green colourblindness
- the option for faculty and students to record their pronouns into the school system
- allowing students to nominate religious occasions and cultural celebrations into the school calendar for acknowledgement and education
- presenting seminars on the impacts of menopause on women in the workplace to offer support for a majority female faculty.

As EDI rep, I would build upon my own diverse experiences to actively engage with students, amplify diverse voices, and collaborate on initiatives that enhance the overall well-being and representation of our medical school community.

Racism,  homophobia , bullying,  abelism and islamaphobia are issues that many students face daily. With the overwhelming environment of the university and toxic atmosphere that can arise at times amongst students sometimes speaking up to a member of staff can be daunting.
As someone who has faced discrimination before I believe that students shouldn't feel ashamed to speak up and report unacceptable behaviour. I'm Damilola ilori and I would like to be your EDI. I'm a first year med student, private tutor and mental health advocate. I'm also a student with a hidden disability so I understand how it feels to be looked down on for having a problem that is out of my control. As your EDI I would like to be your voice and report any concerns or incidents that you are facing  . There are many issues in the university such as bullying, and discrimination that needs fixing . By communicating your concerns and reporting any incidents that you are facing I want to  help create an environment that is safer and more accepting of people of all ages ,races ,sexualities and disabilities.

I am Hasan, a first-year medical student.



I would like to be your EDI representative as I believe that medical school should be an inclusive place for all students regardless of background.

I hope to work with colleagues to tackle issues surrounding discrimination and strive to make the medical school a place where everyone feels they belong.

The role of EDI representative is crucial as fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity allows all students to flourish in a safe environment and encourages everyone to be themselves and not hide their differences as our differences are what make us unique not only as individuals, but also as future medical professionals.

Furthermore, when we feel safe, team ethic increases, as no one feels excluded or fears judgement. Allowing all of us to be one team.

Everyone deserves to feel respected, valued and accepted.

To achieve this aim, I will liaise with the other EDI representatives, the year representatives and others to find ways to tackle current issues that affect students at our medical school and foster greater understanding between all students, so no one feels excluded.

I will use my previous experiences being involved in student councils and in student leadership roles at school to promote your voices, so you are heard.

No discrimination of any kind is acceptable, and I hope we can create a community that promotes the celebration of both our similarities and differences and make discrimination a thing of the past.

Hello!! My name is Shadan, I’m a first year medical student and I’d like to be your Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion representative.

Equality is undoubtedly crucial to feeling comfortable at university and to having a good experience and I know what it’s like to feel that diversity and inclusion is not being taken seriously. I understand how frustrating this is on a personal level, and therefore as your EDI representative, I would always ensure that each of you feel included and represented fairly, regardless of gender, sexuality, religion or ethnicity.

I am an active advocate for what I believe is right. At school, I was dedicated to spreading recognition of different cultures and started a project which changed the teaching curriculum in certain years. This project integrated information about people of colour and countries other than the Western World that have contributed to the certain topics we learnt in class.

My aim is to create an environment that you feel comfortable and included in. I will strive for fair representation and won’t hesitate to speak up for what you believe in. I hope to be the friendly face that you can trust and come to with any concerns throughout the year.

Hi I’m Amar! I’m a 2nd year medical student with a background in supporting people with learning disabilities, including autism, ADHD and dyslexia. I’m also an advocate for mental health and epilepsy awareness and have a passion to support diversity and equality in all settings. I have previous experience in handling discriminatory matters in schools and care homes, such as those involving racism, misogyny and ageism.

As your Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Rep I will strive to do my best to ensure discriminatory behaviours are tackled, promote and support equity and diversity, and be an advocate for all medical students. I will give you the platform to discuss your concerns and ideas with me and also how current practices should be changed or adjusted in order to tackle these issues.

All aspects of diversity should be celebrated and I hope to work with the committee and faculty to achieve this. Ensuring inclusion and eliminating discrimination across the medical school is a top priority of mine and so I hope to work with the committee, faculty, societies and initiatives to ensure fair representation across all areas.

I understand that medical school can at times be challenging and overwhelming, and so I want to be there for you, regardless of your background, and work together with you.

Together we can create a supportive, diverse and inclusive environment in the medical school for all students to thrive in and benefit from!
