Waste, Rubbish and Gardens
You have a responsibility to deal with rubbish and waste, and general maintenance of the outside of your house, such as not allowing hedges to obstruct the path.
How do I manage waste?
In Leeds you will have a black bin for Landfill, and a green bin for recyclables, including glass. You may also have a brown bin for garden waste.
You can find out about what you can put in which bin, and when they are collected here https://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/bins-and-recycling
You must put your bins out on the correct day, and bring them in after - if they are left on the street you could be fined.
Large items
If you have large items, these may be your landlord's responsibility to remove if, for example, they are old furniture your landlord has replaced.
If you have large items of your own you can:
- Take these to the local tip
- Pay a licensed waste collector to remove them. Sometimes scrap metal (but not fridges or freezers) will be collected for free - but make sure the person doing so is licensed. If they tip the waste illegally, and they are not licensed, you could be fined.
- Arrange a council collection.
If you have large waste waiting to be moved you must store this neatly on your premises (in the house, or garden) and not on the street.
My bin isn't getting emptied what can I do?
If your wheelie bin hasn’t been emptied after two working days, take it back to your house and put it out again on the next bin day.
It’s unusual for a bin to be missed twice in a row so if this happens call Leeds City Council on 0113 222 4406 or let them know by filling out the 'report a missed bin' form.
My landlord won't maintain the garden, what can I do?
You will need to check your contract. It may be your responsibility to weed the garden and trim the hedges. If so you will need to do this, or make arrangements for someone to do so.
If it is your landlord's responsibility and they are not doing this, see our disrepair pages.
