Looking After Your House
While it is your Landlord's responsibility to maintain and repair the house, it is also your responsibility to look after the house, keep it in a good state and not cause issues with neighbours or housemates.
How clean do I have to keep the house?
Different people have different living standards, and this can cause problems with other housemates if you disagree. It is best to try and agree at the start who people expect.
Your landlord does not have the right to tell you how to live but it is likely to be in your contract that you must maintain the house in a reasonable state. Particularly in kitchens and bathrooms grease, or mildew can built up and this can be hard to clear at the end of the tenancy.
It is also reasonable that when your landlord needs to do viewings you keep the house in a reasonable state.
What repairs do I need to do?
Tenants are responsible for minor repairs. This could include changing light bulbs, fixing minor things like loose door handles, unblocking the sink and so on. You are also responsible for anything you damage, but don't try and fix this yourself unless you know what you are doing and have the agreement of the landlord, or you could face charges.
What if something breaks or goes wrong?
If something breaks, or is damaged you need to report this to the landlord. If it is wear and tear the landlord should not charge you for it. If it is your responsibility even if it is an accident you will need to pay for it. Don't ignoe it and hope that it will be ok, this could just end up costing you more.
