Unsatisfactory Attendance and Engagement Procedure
If you are struggling to engage with your studies, whether that be attending lectures or handing in assignments, your School may get in touch with you to find out whether you’re okay, and ask if you need further support.
You should log absences or apply for mitigating circumstances as necessary, but if that hasn’t happened you might be brought under the Unsatisfactory Attendance and Engagement Procedure.
It’s really important to respond to your School and to let them know if you have circumstances going on that mean you are not able to fully engage. While the situation might be personal, it’s important to be open and honest with the University - they can’t help if they don’t know something is going on.
The steps of the procedure are as follows:
- You will receive a formal written warning from your Head of School. This will explain that you could be withdrawn. If things don’t improve, you will be given a second formal warning and will be invited to meet with the Student Cases team.
- If things don’t improve, you will be given a second formal warning and will be invited to meet with the Student Cases team.
- Depending on what is discussed, you will either be given a final written warning, or it will be recommended that you are permanently withdrawn from your studies.
A recommendation for permanent withdrawal goes to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and if it gets this far then this is the University’s final decision.
Presumed Withdrawal
There are also situations where the University can presume you are withdrawing from your studies. This is if you are not engaging in your studies and responding to contact from your School, or if you didn’t return following a period of temporary withdrawal.
There will always be some contact to you before this happens, so it’s important to check your emails if you intend to remain at university. You will also be contacted to confirm your withdrawal.
There may be implications to your visa if you are an international student. You should contact studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for advice as LUU Advice cannot advise on visas/immigration.
