Martial Arts
Welcome to Judo
Judo
Judo is a Japanese Martial Art and Olympic sport focusing on throws, locks, sweeps and pins, harnessing both physical prowess and refined technique.
Founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882, Judo translates to the gentle way, highlighting its principle of using an opponent's energy against them. This sport is excellent for enhancing fitness, strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Training
Training is 2x a week at Studio 2 in The Edge, it takes place on Thursdays at 20:30 - 22:00 and Saturdays at 14:30 - 16:30 and is ran by a black belt coach from a local club with guest coaches from the surrounding area for special sessions.
Give-it-a-go
Want to give Judo a go for the first time? We offer 3 free “give it a go” sessions on the 2nd and 4th of October where all are welcome and one on the 18th of October which is for women only and will be run by Caroline Brayson (a 3rd dan black belt with medals at many international competitions including the Veterans World Championships!)
Socials
Judo at Leeds isn't just about training hard - it's about also having fun and building friendships off the mat. We host a variety of socials throughout the year, such as relaxed pub nights, group meals, themed nights out and other quieter socials like bowling or laser tag. Whether you're a seasoned judoka or completely new, our socials are a great way to get to know the other people in the society and feel a part of the Judo community here at Leeds.
Membership
Membership costs £20 per year and is available on the LUU website here. To be insured to train you will have to purchase a membership for the British Judo Association (BJA), the student membership includes a year of insurance, a grading (worth £20!) and much more. You can purchase/find out more here.
