Nightline is a confidential and anonymous listening and information service run by students, for students.

We’ve been supporting students for 40 years and continue to be available every night. All volunteers receive full training so that you are fully equipped to support callers with all of their requirements. Our phoneline is open every night  from 8pm until 8am every night of term; instant messaging and email is open 8pm until 12am every night (including weekends and holidays).

Want to get involved?

Volunteering for Leeds Nightline is one of the most rewarding experiences and we’re always looking for enthusiastic students to join us. You can apply to become a volunteer at any time! Want to know what volunteering with Leeds Nightline is really like?

Feel free to check out ’10 Myths about Leeds Nightline’ below, which was produced in February 2018.

Applications for our February 2022 Intake are now closed! Our next recruitment drive will be in September/October 2022 so keep an eye out for more information!

Volunteer Testaments

Nightline Volunteer, 2016

“Last night was the last shift of the year and also my last shift with Leeds Nightline. I’ve met some of the most amazing and inspiring people of my life while being a part of this society and I think it’s probably the best thing I’ve done while being at uni.”

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

“If I had to choose the most important thing I’ve learnt as a Nightliner, it would be that you never know how someone else is feeling- you will never understand everything about their situation, or what’s going on their mind, however similar the situation may seem. Just listen, empathise and then listen some more- people don’t always want advice or solutions, they just want to be heard.”

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

“Our volunteers are selected through our recruitment process, meaning that everybody’s in the same boat, and you don’t have to fear that others have joined the society in existing friendship groups.”

Nightline Volunteer, 2019

“A lot of societies I feel like you have to be quite confident or a big character to really get involved and feel like you make a difference. With Nightline, not only did I get to contribute to a great cause, but I could do it without any attention and quietly do my bit.”
