Welcome to Dr Ambedkar Society

Welcome to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Society at the University of Leeds. We are a society dedicated to exploring the powerful ideals of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a revolutionary social reformer whose life's work was dedicated to the annihilation of caste and the pursuit of universal human rights.

Our core mission is to confront and critically analyze systems of social hierarchy. We provide a space for robust dialogue on the nature of caste, a system of graded inequality, and its parallels with other forms of discrimination based on class, race, and gender. We champion Dr. Ambedkar's foundational principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity as the necessary tools for building a truly just society.

The society serves as an academic and social hub for anyone interested in:

Challenging Caste: Directly engaging with Dr. Ambedkar's writings on the caste system to understand its mechanics and its impact on society, politics, and the economy.

Social Justice: Broadening our understanding of how different forms of structural oppression intersect and reinforce one another.

Constitutionalism & Law: Examining the legal frameworks designed to protect and advance human rights against deep-rooted social discrimination.

Education as Liberation: Championing education as the most critical tool for dismantling prejudice and empowering marginalized communities.

We host guest lectures from leading academics, panel discussions, film screenings, and reading groups. Whether your studies are in law, sociology, politics, history, or any other discipline, the ideas of Dr. Ambedkar offer invaluable insights into the workings of power and the global struggle for social equality.

The Dr. Ambedkar Society is an inclusive space for all students. We invite you to join us in our pursuit of knowledge and our commitment to building a more equitable world.
