Welcome to Dr Ambedkar Society
Dr BR Ambedkar a scholar and jurist by training and profession in colonial India, post India’s independence became the architect of the Indian constitution. Aside from this he also emerges as the tallest leader and figure of the communities and groups historically oppressed by the social structure of caste, gender and their intersection.
A part of Dr Ambedkar’s legacy lies in the UK given his higher education from London School of Economics, University of London and Gray’s Inn. To preserve his memory and to celebrate his legacy, social justice movement against caste in the UK have successful created a public memory of Dr Ambedkar in the UK. In England, he now has the ‘Ambedkar Museum’ dedicated to him at 10 King Henry’s Road, NW3 London where he lodged in the 1920s, and the ‘Ambedkar Room’ - named after him at Gray’s Inn where he was called to the bar in 1922. He is the only Indian to be given this honour. The London School of Economics houses a bust and portrait of Dr Ambedkar. Dr Ambedkar also has an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography of ‘men and women who have shaped British History and culture, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century’.
Universities in the UK have gradually begun to set up initiatives and societies in his name. The Dr Ambedkar Society at University of Leeds is in continuum of this aims to contribute to this ongoing development in the internationalization of Dr Ambedkar’s ideas and thoughts of social justice and his inter-disciplinary scholarship.

We are keen to host you at our Academic Events (seminar, conference, book launches etc.), Reading Club and Visual Culture; and facilitating Peer learning and support sessions on academic and interpersonal skills.
We look forward to organizing tours to places that hold the public memory of Dr Ambedkar in the UK.
