Welcome to Nursing

LUNS (Leeds University Nursing Society)

LUNS (Leeds University Nursing Society) is the society for student nurses, healthcare students and anyone else who takes an interest in what we do!
We want to provide a space for support, friendship and fun for all student nurses in Leeds. We’ve got lots planned throughout the year, from fundraisers and coffee mornings to Otley Runs and the Healthcare Ball, so there really is something for everyone. We’re keen to offer a wide range of events to make sure everyone feels welcome and included within LUNS and we’re always open to suggestions. We can’t wait to meet you all!

Socials
Socials are a big part of university life, and here at LUNS we want everyone to have the opportunity to get involved and have fun! We throw some pretty great socials and, if we do say so ourselves, some of the best in Leeds.

How do we do it?

Well, we have two very passionate and dedicated Social Secretaries whose job is to plan, organise and deliver socials and events throughout the year.

Our socials are a great way to meet people within your cohort and your nursing field, whether that’s Adult, Child or Mental Health, as well as students from across the wider School of Healthcare.

They’re also a great opportunity to meet second and third-year student nurses. Not only can this enhance your social life, but getting to know students in other years can really help you settle into the course. Remember, they’ve been in the exact same position as you! They can offer advice on referencing, the best library resources, revision techniques, placement essentials and, of course, the most important question of all… WHAT SHOES DO I BUY FOR PLACEMENT?!

We also understand that not everyone wants to take part in drinking socials or be in environments centred around alcohol, and we totally get that. That’s why we hold plenty of sober socials throughout the year too.

Previously, we’ve collaborated with Yoga and Ju-Jitsu societies, taken on the Leeds Light Night walk, held Christmas film nights and had picnics in the park, plus plenty more!

We want to cater for everyone and, like we said before, we are always open to suggestions. Our Social Secs work hard to make sure there’s something for everyone, so if there’s a particular social theme, sober activity or society collaboration you’d love to see, please reach out!

We also have a suggestions pouch on our Society Information Board on Level 7 of the Worsley Building for anyone who would prefer to stay anonymous. We collect and read through these monthly and bring your ideas to our committee meetings. We can’t guarantee that every suggestion will be planned and delivered, but if you don’t ask… you don’t get ;)

Development
We know the nursing course can be full on. While we want LUNS to create an environment where student nurses can let loose and have fun with friends, we also want to provide opportunities for you to learn and develop skills that can support you both personally and professionally.

This year, we’re hoping to introduce development events such as career workshops, guest speakers from a range of specialties, CV building and interview advice and techniques.

This is a new project that our 2026/27 LUNS committee is really excited to develop, and we’re hoping to hold a number of these events throughout the academic year. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, keep an eye on our social media and Members’ Chat for updates!

Merchandise
One of the things people look forward to most is getting their hands on exclusive LUNS merchandise to wear around campus and show everyone back home what you get up to in Leeds!

We’ve got lots of ideas and concepts that we’d love to bring to life this year. We even have a committee member specifically dedicated to Marketing, Merchandise and Media, who’ll be working on some very exciting designs.

Keep an eye on our social media and Members’ Chat for details about this year’s merch. We think you’re going to love it!

Healthcare Ball
The Healthcare Ball is the biggest event we throw every year!

Alongside our friends in Midwifery, Radiography and Social Work, we work
throughout the year to plan the annual end of year ball for the School of Healthcare.

It’s a chance to celebrate everything you and your course mates have achieved throughout the academic year: making it to the end of another year, finishing placements, surviving assignments and exams and, of course, balancing it all with a very fun social life with us!

We also celebrate those coming to the end of their time here at Leeds, after three years of hard work, dedication and perseverance, as well as all the people who have supported us throughout the year, from friends and flatmates to lecturers and university staff.

The Healthcare Ball isn’t just open to LUNS members. It’s open to students from across the School of Healthcare, their friends and, of course, our lovely faculty members. That includes those teaching you vital content in lectures and tutorials, supporting you in clinical skills and simulation sessions and the unsung heroes working behind the scenes, such as our Student Support and Practice Placement teams.

It really is a night to remember and one big celebration to say well done for
everything you’ve achieved and good luck with whatever comes next!

Keep an eye out for more information when Semester 2 begins!!

Memberships & GIAG
Now that you’ve heard a little more about what we offer, we hope you’ve already clicked that little purchase button next to our memberships. And if not, that’s okay, we guess… you’ll just have to come and see what we’re all about!

We’ll be at the Freshers’ Fair during freshers week, so come and speak to us, ask us questions and get to know the committee. We’re here to help you settle into Leeds and hopefully make it feel like a home away from home while you study with us. Keep an eye out on Social Media for our date, time & location!

Oh, and did we forget to mention our FREE Give It a Go social?

Join us on 29 September 2026 from 8pm at Terrace Bar in the LUU building for a night of drinks (soft or alcoholic, your choice!), games and, if you’re lucky, you might even be blessed (or more likely deafened) by some karaoke later in the night!

Membership is £15 for the 2026/27 academic year.

We can’t wait to meet you!
Lots of love,
Your 2026/27 LUNS Committee x
