What is Swing Dance?
Swing refers not only to the toe tapping rhythm found in many forms of Jazz music, but also a collection of the most fantastic partner and solo dances such as Lindy hop, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, and Balboa. These dances originated in the 1920s to 40s, created by African American dancers in Harlem, New York, who were inspired by the vibrancy of the jazz and swing music that was so prevalent at the time. The passion for these dances continues to exist in Leeds, the UK, and beyond, within the ever-expanding network of swing dance enthusiasts all around the world.
The society runs weekly dance classes, teaching mainly Lindy Hop alongside Charleston tasters. Classes are casual, relaxed and cater for all levels, from beginners to more experienced dancers, so there's something for everyone! There’s also plenty of time for social dancing and practice. No need to bring a partner, as we rotate throughout the lesson, so just wear something comfy and come along!
