Welcome to Mechanical Engineering Society (MechSoc)

The Mechanical Engineering Society (MechSoc) is the home of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds. Whether you're studying Mechanical Engineering, another engineering discipline, or are simply interested in design, innovation, and engineering projects, everyone is welcome to join.

Our mission is to create a welcoming and supportive community where students can take a break from their studies, make new friends, develop valuable skills, connect with industry professionals, and gain hands-on engineering experience through our projects, competitions, and workshops.

What We Offer

Weekly Coffee Mornings

We host a weekly coffee morning in the School of Mechanical Engineering (starting on the Week 2). They will alternate between Tuesday and Thursday, and will take place in the School of Mechanical Engineering foyer. We run these sessions to give you a break between lectures, catch-up with friends, and meet academics and staff in the school.

Socials

University life is about more than lectures and coursework. Throughout the year, we organise a variety of socials that help students unwind, meet like-minded people, and become part of our engineering community.

  • Pub Socials
  • Bowling
  • Gaming in Crossroads
  • and many more!

Engineering Projects & Competitions

We're passionate about helping students develop practical skills and build their portfolios. Our project teams and competitions give members the chance to apply what they've learned in the classroom to real-world engineering challenges.

Our activities include:

  • REMAP Projects - Working with the REMAP charity to develop engineering solutions that improve quality of life for people with disabilities, old age, or any other issues. These will start in Semester 1.
  • UKSEDS National Rocketry Championship (NRC) - Designing, building, and launching an amateur rocket as part of one of the UK's leading student rocketry competitions. This will be starting in Semester 1.
  • IMechE Design Challenge - Competing in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' flagship student design competition. This will take place in Semester 1 when the design specification is released by IMechE.
  • MechSoc Design Competition - Our own annual design competition, primarily aimed at students within the School of Mechanical Engineering. This will take place in the latter half of Semester 1.
  • R&D Division: For our more technically challenging projects, we run them in our R&D Division. These can range from non-planar 3D printers, robotics, and other research - if you have any ideas please let us know! We hope to also provide academic research opportunities for students in the School of Mechanical Engineering (current working on this!). This will be starting in Semester 1.

Professional Development

We're committed to helping students prepare for their future careers. Members will have opportunities to:

  • Network with employers and industry professionals.
  • Meet alumni from the University of Leeds School of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Attend technical workshops and professional development sessions.
  • Learn about internships, placements, graduate schemes, and career opportunities.

As the recognised IMechE North Yorkshire Young Members Panel, we work closely with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to provide additional opportunities for our members.

Partnerships and Collaborations

MechSoc is proud to be sponsored by WDS Components, supporting our mission to provide valuable opportunities for engineering students.

We also collaborate with other student societies across the university, including the Leeds AI Society, with whom we help organise the annual Leeds AI Week: AI in Engineering event. If you are a part of a society that would be happy to collaborate with us, please do let us know!
