Formation Description

Only 28% of the STEM workforce is female meaning that women have to work in a predominately male dominated field which can sometimes be intimidating especially when looking at the gender bias with STEM being more male steered and being seen as more masculine. The stereotypes around working in STEM subjects can discourage women to enter their dream professions and with women still facing inequality everyday, even at the workplace it can be intimidating to raise your own voice. Whilst the university is just in its gender equality, there is still a hidden voice lying under STEM wherever you go where there is a difference between genders in STEM. I want to start this society as I am a fellow woman in STEM doing my PhD and have noticed the amount of women in the workplace. I would like to create a society for any woman to join, to not feel ashamed or scared to talk about STEM. A safe space to not be discouraged but encouraged and to venture into areas of research they never knew they could. The benefits would allow more women to be confident in working in STEM and hopefully allow them to have the confidence in wanting to progress lowering the gender gap and having more women working in the STEM field. More voices to be heard. Any opportunities would be looking to arrange a women in STEM day, keeping an eye out for any events or even socials where we go bowling together or look to do a day trip focusing on STEM.
