Formation Description

SomSoc would enhance individuals experience at the University of Leeds, as we would celebrate positive cultural values, educate each other about our cultures and try to eliminate any barriers to social cohesion and inclusion. Somsoc would enhance an already growing Somali community in Leeds by creating friendships that help each other through difficulties and even provide opportunities, such as mentoring others. Nonetheless, we would educate others about Somali culture as the society would be welcome to all, accepting others from different beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

Since joining University in October, I have attended other societies and made connections with other Somalis across all University years. I discussed the possibility of starting a Somsoc with them and they were in agreement that it was needed. To develop the group, I would encourage the existing Somali connections I have to share about the society with their friends. I would also share about it with existing societies and on social media, such as through group chats, to bring together Somalis and anyone interested in our culture.

My aims and objectives for SomSoc are different from any other existing societies, such as the ACS and EA, as SomSoc would be more in depth into the Somali culture, it would create a safe place for Muslims who are ethnically black. We would be different as we would celebrate our different upbringing culturally and background but, more ethnically contained as we would have our own customs and traditions.
