Formation Description

We want to start this society because there is an immense gap that needs filling for journalism students. Our committee, made up of students within the Journalism course, have felt as though we didn't have anywhere to turn to until we formed this group. Since (unofficially) forming, we have had great feedback and involvement from younger and older journalism students who also felt as though this space was missing. We have also had a lot of participation from non-journalism students, who are studying other subjects but may be interested in going into the field of journalism, and have said they have wanted a society like this for a while now.

The benefits of our society will include:

- Opportunities to meet professionals in the field and ask them questions

- A space to explore and practice journalism without hard commitments, like writing workshops and filming tutorials. A lot of people don't have the time for societies like LSR and LSTV, so we give them the chance to explore their interests without having to commit to weekly shows etc...

- Forming friendships with people who have similar interests. Since creating the society, we have brought together students from journalism, STEM courses, other humanities courses - and even some students from Leeds Beckett! We have seen connections and friendships be formed through the society, which is just what we wanted

When we applied and were rejected last year, we have since operated unofficially and have had heaps of interest. Our Give It A Go had over 30 people attend, and even more have joined since we have held our writing workshops and other socials. Our academic socials have been loved by non-journalism students especially, since they don't have the chance to try out different styles of journalism elsewhere.

We have also held joint socials with Media Society, who recognise that there is a separate space needed for Journalism Society - as they cannot always fulfil the specific interests, since Media is such a wide sector. Their committee, as well as some other media-focused committees, think that having Journalism Society is a brilliant idea.

As an unofficial society, we are so happy that we have had so much interest and involvement from people - so we know we could do so much more with official LUU status and funding!
