Formation Description
A distinct Bangladeshi Society is needed because a growing number of students arrive directly from Bangladesh each year and require community, support, and cultural familiarity as they navigate a new academic and social environment.
Mr Mobarak, a fourth-year PhD student who is leading this initiative to form the society, has personally attended Bengali Society (the closest society to our needs) events, invited MSc and PhD students to join him, spoken with alumni, and reached out directly to the Bengali Society committee. Through these engagements, it became clear that while the Bengali Society plays an important role, its focus—shaped mainly by British-Bangladeshi experiences—does not fully meet the needs of students who have lived in Bangladesh..
Therefore, this society will:
• take initiatives to connect Bangladeshi students who come directly from Bangladesh
• create cultural events that include people from all backgrounds
• promote cross-cultural friendship
• provide academic and emotional support
• collaborate with skill-based societies
• encourage volunteering and humanitarian action
• support charity fundraising during crises
• help students feel connected and valued
• contribute positively to LUU’s multicultural environment
The society will enrich campus life, promote international collaboration, and help the University of Leeds remain a welcoming and globally minded institution.
