Formation Description

I want to start this society because I know firsthand how challenging it can be to move from Myanmar to the UK alone. When I first arrived in Leeds, I felt homesick and out of place—especially since my brother went to Bath with a friend while I came here by myself. That experience made me realise how important it is to have a community that offers warmth, belonging, and shared understanding.

Many Burmese students go through the same feeling when they first arrive, often missing the cultural traditions and celebrations that make home so special. Without a society like this, they could go three or four years without celebrating meaningful events like Thingyan (Water Festival), which is such an integral part of our culture. By creating this society, I hope to bring those moments back to life—allowing Myanmar students to reconnect with their roots, celebrate together, and feel closer to home even while studying abroad.

Beyond emotional support, the society will also provide opportunities for personal growth—helping members develop leadership, teamwork, and organisational skills through cultural events and projects. By aiming to collaborate with other LUU societies, we hope to foster cultural exchange and create a more connected and inclusive student community at Leeds.
