Formation Description

This has been an established society for a long time, but following the lack of activity in the 2023/24 academic year, it fell into dissolution. As a consequence of its dissolution, many students (primarily in first and second year) feel that they do not have the same benefits as many other university courses, and feel that they cannot be fully integrated into the university's social life as a result. A society of this sort can be pivotal for someone who comes to university without specific hobbies, and may be quite introverted, with their interests mainly pertaining to the subject they study. This society can give them the opportunity to be involved in a larger 'family', something that they feel close to and can easily relate to. As such, the society does aim to have regular socials, as with other societies, but also organise an array of events that are linked to the subject. In particular, we are very interested in organising site visits as this can be very useful to student learning. The school already does quite a lot for the students in terms of industry links, but student engagement is generally low. If the students can go as a group, then this can certainly add to student understanding within the field. Additionally, if lower level students are able to talk with higher level students, they will have much insight to gain and it may give them the reassurance they need to truly progress with their studies. Finally, we aim to work with the (soon to be formed) Architecture Society, as the subjects cross over frequently, furthering the symbiotic relationship that will be found when the students work in industry, as well as the work they do during their studies. We aim to finish the second semester with a ball, and aim to redefine CivSoc as something that is long lasting.
