Formation Description
Leeds already has a large eSports and Video Games society, but we think a dedicated rhythm game society is beneficial for many reasons:
- Whilst the rhythm game community is social, they are primarily single-player games, so finding in-person events is hard and there is less incentive to play them at the existing gaming societies. We have spoken to several Leeds students, including those at existing societies, who have expressed interest in a space specifically for rhythm gaming, so it would be distinct among similar societies.
- Many rhythm games are originally Japanese arcade machines, which are rarely found in the UK and often obscure, even to experienced players of other games. Some are available nearby at Arcade Club Leeds (and we would be organising occasional visits so members can go in a group), but there are many more that we will provide controllers and equipment for.
- The specialist controllers needed to play arcade rhythm games at home are expensive, which is a barrier to entry, especially for someone who isn't sure if they will like a particular game. Our society will give members access to games they wouldn't otherwise be able to play and introduce new players to a variety of titles in the genre.
- Our weekly socials will include other activities; for example, although the main satisfaction in rhythm games comes from personal progression, we also want to showcase the competitive side by hosting friendly tournaments, which we have the means to do as only a single setup is required.
Fundamentally, we aim to increase access to rhythm games and share information about them. Rhythm games are a fun hobby through which all of us in the committee have met many friends and had many hours of enjoyment, and forming the society allows us to share that with our student community.
Thank you for your consideration,
February, Elaine, and Oscar
