Formation Description

Recognizing the challenges faced by many research groups, including a lack of visibility and connection within the university, we saw the need for a formal society. We have experience hosting AI events at least monthly for a few years. Weve consistently attracted 15-30 people per event, similar to other research groups we have collaborated with. Unfortunately, weve seen many groups lose traction and stop, typically due to a lack of connection with others in the uni and a lack of visibility. Recognizing the potential to further connect both undergraduate and postgraduate students alike and engage a broader student audience, we thought it would be good to establish a formal society. It serves as a support system for other similar groups to give them a voice and platform and to students transitioning into academia or industry, offering exposure to a range of opportunities. We aim to make the society (and committee) inclusive, diverse and interdisciplinary representing the wider university and inviting those running similar groups whether through already established connections or new connections. We also want to have the society flexible to change and to exist for many years to come.
