Formation Description
We are not simply a social mobility society – we specifically target state-school students and focus on improving their employability and supporting them in their career journeys. 93% Clubs have been affiliated with university student unions all over the UK, despite possible overlaps with other social mobility societies, as the aims of the 93% Club are more specific and are part of a distinct national charity and network. At the University of Leeds, over 80% of the cohort, who began in the 2020/21 academic year, is state educated (source: HESA). This has been reflected in the high engagement and interest we have got from students at the University of Leeds so far and further strengthens our point that the student body will greatly benefit from our society being part of the LUU. We want to become part of the LUU to further the abovementioned aims and be able to organise bigger events with sponsorships for our student members. While the club focuses on state-school students, we do not exclude privately educated students and would welcome them if they are interested. So far, both state-school students and privately educated students have been interested in our society and wanted to support it.
We believe students will benefit greatly from our society, giving them key insights into different careers, as can be seen from our events so far. We have organised events on a wide range of careers, such as law, accounting, journalism, psychometric tests, policy and lobbying and social media influencing. Amongst our speakers have been barristers from Doughty Street Chambers, a QC, representatives from leading employers such as Clyde and Co and JP Morgan, Lydia Proudlove, known also as Lydia Violeta, who studies at the University of Leeds and is a very famous YouTuber and studytuber. Our biggest achievement so far has definitely been inviting Baroness Hale of Richmond, former President of the UK Supreme Court, to the University of Leeds in person in November 2021. As far as we are aware, it was the first time the Baroness came to the University of Leeds for an event by a student society. She told the students more about her journey to the UK Supreme Court and how she overcame barriers resulting from her lower socio-economic background. The entry to the event was free and the tickets were finished in just a few hours. For this event, the 93% Foundation gave the 93% Club Leeds the award for outstanding event of the year among all the UK clubs.
