Formation Description

This new society will replace the former Mechanical Engineering Society at the University of Leeds and is being launched at the request of the Head of School for Mechanical Engineering. The initiative is led by the current School Representative for Mechanical Engineering (Aman Raj Kaith),  who will also serve as this year’s President. Our goal is not just to revive the society, but to redefine it — shifting the focus from purely social and networking events to hands-on engineering projects that give students real-world experience.

We have the full support of senior academic staff and are in discussions with the IMechE to secure official endorsement and sponsorship. The society aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical skills required to thrive in university teams, national competitions, and industry settings.

Membership will be open to all students with a passion for engineering, regardless of prior experience. Throughout the year, we plan to run a series of fast-paced, project-based workshops across various fields of mechanical engineering. These projects will be designed to be engaging, collaborative, and low-pressure, allowing students to learn by doing in a guided environment.

In addition to internal projects, we also plan to form a dedicated team to compete in the UKSEDS National Rocketry Competition (2025/26), giving members the opportunity to apply their skills to a real-world engineering challenge. In addition to the engineering projects we plan to host, we will continue to promote student networking by inviting guest speakers from industry to share valuable insights on the skills most in demand and how students can best position themselves for their desired careers.

There has already been significant interest shown in this initiative from the student body, with many looking forward to getting involved in hands-on engineering work for the first time.
