Formation Description

Who: The Leeds Albanian Society is for Albanian, Kosovar, and wider Albanian-diaspora students, as well as anyone at the University of Leeds interested in Albanian culture, language, history, music, or community life serving as a platform for student support.

What: The society will create a welcoming and inclusive space for students to celebrate Albanian identity, learn about the culture, and build friendships. Throughout the year we will run events such as: Albanian Independence Day & Kosovo Independence Day celebrations, cultural and historical talks, traditional dance & music sessions, pub quizzes, sports socials, networking with Albanian professionals, alumni, and UK Albanian societies such as ALSA (Albanian-led student association), academic & career support events and casual socials: coffee meetups, study sessions, movie nights and picnics. They will also have access to our Instagram @leedsalbsoc and WhatsApp group available for updates and social as well as networking events.

Where: Events will be hosted across University of Leeds and LUU spaces, such as seminar rooms, meeting rooms, Common Ground, outdoor campus areas, and sports facilities, as well as occasional off-campus venues for socials or collaborations.

When: Activities will run consistently throughout the academic year. Core cultural events take place in November (Albanian Independence Day) and February (Kosovo Independence Day), with social, academic, sporting, and collaborative events scheduled fortnightly to maintain engagement.

Why: The society fills a significant gap within LUU by representing a vibrant and currently underrepresented cultural community. It supports Albanian international students, promotes intercultural understanding on campus, and provides a space where students can celebrate culture, share traditions, and feel seen and supported. Beyond Leeds, the society aims to build a UK-wide Albanian student network, creating opportunities for social events and academic/career development.

How: The society will operate through consistent fortnightly events, member-led initiatives, and strong organisational planning for major and casual events. Funding will come from LUU grants. We will collaborate with other societies to share resources and reduce costs. Long-term sustainability will be ensured through member engagement, regular events, leadership opportunities, and a structured handover process for future committees, helping build a lasting community hub for Albanian students at Leeds.
