Formation Description

Two members of the core committee, hoping to reform Brain Leeds, have several years of experience on the Brain Leeds committee (2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024). We want to bring back the society that helped us gain exposure to these fascinating specialities and build connections within the professional field. All members of the core committee are 4th and 5th-year medical students. This means we have more experience in these specialities and research, as well as previous networking opportunities and committee experience. We hope to use all of our prior experience to help make Brain Leeds a success again and to ensure this continues for the future.

Having students with previous committee experience (from Brain Leeds and other societies) will help us foster a welcoming committee environment where everyone can share ideas, but will also help us keep organised and ensure past failures do not happen again. We have had a meeting with the president of last year's (2024-2025) committee to understand why the society failed to stay active and to help us plan to mitigate the same issues that manifested. For example, in the past, we believed there were too many committee members, allowing confusion of roles and responsibilities, with tasks being forgotten and not completed. This year, we have streamlined roles and made a clear list of tasks for each committee member.

Benefits and opportunities we plan to provide:

  • Promote Clinical Excellence in Neurology & Neurosurgery
  • Deliver high-quality and enjoyable teaching events, case-based discussions, and OSCE preparation tailored to medical students at all stages (including an OSCE escape room - this was a successful, popular event in previous years)

Foster Research, Audit, and Academic Engagement

Support students in accessing neuro-related research, audit, and QI opportunities through connections with the Leeds Neuroscience Department

Host journal clubs and research showcases to build confidence in critical appraisal and presentation skills.

Guide members in applying for funding, electives, and academic prizes, including preparation for the annual National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition

Advertising the ABN (Association of British Neurologists) & NANSIG (Neurology and NeuroSurgery Interest Group) Student Day (an event some of our committee have attended previously and found to be very useful)

Enhance Exposure to Neuro-Specialities

Facilitate shadowing, simulation, and elective (a student-designed placement that final year medical students undertake locally or internationally) planning in stroke medicine, neurotrauma, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, and neurosurgery.

Use connections with local clinicians and researchers to offer mentorship and insight into career pathways

Create Inclusive, Student-Led Teaching Resources

Develop and share visual aids, revision cards, and flowcharts for neuro topics.

Encourage peer-led tutorials and collaborative learning across year groups - this helps build portfolios for students through teaching opportunities, and helps other students’ learning

Engage the Public and Wider Community

Organise outreach events during Brain Awareness Week (16th - 22nd March 2026) and similar campaigns.

Promote brain health, debunk myths, and raise awareness of neurological conditions.

We will achieve these goals through informative posts and quizzes on our social media

Set up charity events (eg. Bake Sales), to raise awareness of neurological diseases and their impact, for example, by collaborating with the Yorkshire Brain Tumour Charity (we have collaborated with this charity previously: 2022-2024)

Build a Sustainable and Supportive Committee Culture

Establish clear handover processes, role descriptions, and shared resources to ensure continuity.

Foster a welcoming environment that values diversity, initiative, and collaboration.
