Formation Description
The project has been in the works for some time now and society would give it more weight and would be the impetus needed to kickstart it. As individuals, we have been in contact with an organisation called Canal Connections, concerned with the upkeep of and public engagement with the city's canal. Becoming a society would allow us to appear more professional, approaching landowners and artists with a greater sense of establishment and professionalism.
We want to create a community feel both within and outside of the University via a blend of art, social engagement, environmental appreciation, and mental health awareness. Student (and ideally local) artists will gain exposure from displaying work as well as get a sense of giving back to the community, and improving the city's culture. It will brighten up that area in a sensitive way to the natural surroundings, aiming to amplify the beauty of the area rather than diminish it.
Setting up a society would allow the project to build in numbers and give it the opportunity to be ongoing, with the potential to connect with other areas, not only in Leeds but across the UK. We feel it would be an extremely rewarding initiative that would encourage University of Leeds students to give something back to their city and its residents.
