Formation Description
To create a space in which people can have adventures through the lost art of hitchhiking. The ambition is for those to get out of their comfort zones and have an unexpected adventure with their friends. Through society, we hope that people will gain new social and independent skills and confidence whilst introducing awareness of the carbon output of travelling by utilising the surplus of motor vehicles that use national motorways. In addition to the society providing once-in-a-lifetime trips, the main goal will be to raise money for important charities and help those in need, external of the society. Furthermore, at the University of Sheffield, there is already an ongoing dedicated charity hitchhiking society, which has been running since 2003, raising millions of pounds for various charities over the years whilst also providing amazing and eye-opening trips for students each year. This is a society we have spoken to and would intend to collaborate with and take on a similar ethos.
We wanted to start this society as a means for people to go on trips at university that offers a more unique experience that isn't typical on the trips run by other societies whilst also giving students a chance to make a difference in their local communities via charity fundraising.
