Formation Description
As students of both maths and music we don't feel completely at home in either MathSoc or LUUMS, and are often conflicted between the two. Each intake of Maths and Music freshers gets to know the people in their year, but are isolated from other years. We would like to change this by having frequent social events to encourage intermingling across the different year groups. Having gone through the experience ourselves, we want to provide a safe space that supports future students in similar situations. Keeping this society open to more than just Maths and Music joint honours students allows members to meet new people and engage with those of similar interests. Also, with the society being open to all year groups, people can join at any time, and can meet people from all over the university, from 1st year Mathematics and Music students who have had limited opportunities to meet others, to 4th year History students with an interest in the two subjects. To make this intermingling easier for everyone, we will hold regular socials/events in all kinds of environments to allow everyone to feel at home and comfortable, without pushing them too much out of their comfort zones in terms of socialising and making friends. Depending on numbers, we could also operate a buddy system where the 1st year joint honours students are able to meet older students as well as providing them with another student for academic support throughout their degree. We hope to be accessible to anyone with an interest in both subjects as well as being a fun way for people to meet each other and to hopefully make friends for life!
