Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh Everyone!πŸ™

Please come down with your friends for langar (a free meal) anywhere from 10am-3pm on Monday 18th Nov at the Marquee opposite the LUU at the University of Leeds (see poster on @leedssikhsoc).

Please upon entry to the marquee bring head coverings to cover your hair with (there will be limited available) and remove your shoes and the sevadaars (volunteers) will direct you.

If anybody would like to volunteer to do seva (selfless service); serving food/drinks, tying head coverings on students, storing people's shoes etc etc or if anyone would like to provide anything for the event, please drop us a dm on Instagram: @leedssikhsoc.

What is this event, What is Langar and What is being celebrated?

This event is based on β€œLangar” which puts equality into practice and has been happening for over 500 years.  Langar is when we sit on the same level as everyone no matter of our societal status and share a free traditional, vegetarian meal. This is for everyone and is irrespective of religion, caste, race, gender, economic status or age.

Langar was started by the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji where instead of using money given by their father to make profit they used the money to feed the poor holy men.

Carrying on this seva, Sikhs all over the world offer a free vegetarian meal for everyone.
If you go to any Gurdwara (Sikh Place of Worship) you will always be able to have a free meal. And so by offering Langar to all is a way of us celebrating the 555th Gurpurab (coming) of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji to this world.

Quick Fact:

Did you know Sri Harmandir Sahib feeds 100,000 meals to people from all over the world every single day and this doubles on weekends and special occasions!  This Gurdwara (Sikh Place of Worship) can be seen in the Langar on Campus poster in the background which you may have heard of as β€œThe Golden Temple”.

See you all at Langar on Campus soon! πŸ™
