Olivia Warburton

Hey dancers, Iām Olivia (Liv) Warburton and I will be going into my second year of BA Theatre and performance with enterprise in September. One thing I have definitely learnt from being in the performance industry is that it can get super tiring and sometimes that can be the case when youāre a dancer too! Thatās why Iād love to be your welfare rep for the 2022/2023 academic year. Whether youāre just feeling a bit overwhelmed about balancing uni work and society activities or youāre not feeling in the greatest headspace I can be that shoulder to cry on or even just to reassure you that having one too many drinks at fruity is absolutely fine - weāve all been there! In my first year with modern, I have been a part of the inter contemporary classes and joined in with lots of the social activities as well as the March and May showcases. It has been a great way to make new friends and maintain a hobby I have been doing since the age of 10. I am already a rep for my degree meaning I am a point of call to my peers to voice any concerns or raise any questions. This is something I believe I do well and would be happy to provide a similar role in Modern as I enjoy helping others and making everyone feel happy and heard.
Within this role, it is important to engage with external charities to fundraise for them by creating exciting events for us dancers. I would love to work closely with a mental health charity of the societies choice to create a fundraising karaoke night or a unique dance class for us all to try as we are doing this year. As well as this I would love to create an evening once a week where we could hire out one of the studios in the union for half an hour as a drop-in session for any dancers wanting a chat or even for them to practice any dances or moves they've been struggling with in class. This would be super beneficial for everyone as I know how daunting it can be asking for help or wanting to talk to someone but not necessarily sure who to speak to. It is important that we all have different outlets to help us relax and if having someone like me to talk to can help ease anyone's concerns or just chat (I can do a lot of chatting) then I am your girl.
Outside of dance and my degree I love music, holidays and going for a drink in a beer garden with friends. I hope this gives you all a better idea of what it would be like next year if I was your Modern Dance Welfare Rep x

Lauren Slater

Hi everyone! I'm Lauren, a 2nd year Liberal Arts student, majoring in Theatre and Performance, and a member of jazz and tap classes within LUU Modern Dance!
I'm running for Welfare Rep as I believe this is a role best suited to my personality, passions and nature! I am someone always willing to listen and find fulfilment in helping others. I am passionate about mental health awareness, and always wanting to be the best I can be mentally and physically, so hopefully some of the methods I have tried and tested will help some of you!
As seen within my poster, I have many aims I'd love to fulfil within my year as Welfare Rep, and I hope you voting for me will allow these to come into fruition. Welfare Wednesdays is something I would love to introduce to provide differing motivational techniques week by week to overcome that mid-week slump and hopefully, find a tip that works for you! This won't stop when term ends either, as I want to provide members with challenges and advice even in holiday periods, in order to keep self care consistent and wellbeing high! I am aiming to keep awarding āDancer of the Weekā, as I believe it is massively important to acknowledge members for their talent, energy and technique for a confidence boost, as sometimes that is all we need! Finally, liaison with external groups will allow us to fundraise for various charities and raise awareness on the subject and people they support, which is important for those affected and wider society!
I am someone massively passionate about mental health and wellbeing, and I am hoping my knowledge and experiences will be able to aid you all through any problem you may face. Whether it be regarding the society, regarding dance as a sport, regarding university or for a general chat, I am always happy to take some time to talk! A problem shared is a problem halved and I would be honoured to help anyone in need. Within this, I will aim to provide resources regarding current affairs that may help anyone affected or wanting to help, as well as signposting you to any services the university provides. I want you all to feel as secure and supported as possible!
As much as mental health and wellbeing is massively important to recognise, I feel as though knowledge and advice re physical wellbeing is something lacking within dance societies. Thus, I am aiming to share recipes with adequate amounts of carbs and protein for active dancers, and as a vegetarian myself, I will cater to those with differing nutritional requirements. I am also aiming to share quick, cheap snacks on a student budget, and offer information and advice on workouts, stretching and injury prevention, to ensure our bodies are happy, as well as our minds!
Most of all, I just want to be a friendly face to all in the society! I will always offer a big cheesy smile, hug or chat about anything, and want to support all of us to be the best we can be! A happy society is a successful society, and I want to ensure all runs as smoothly as possible for the 22/23 year!
I hope you've enjoyed reading about what I'd love to do, and I just hope I get the opportunity to fulfil my aims!
Lots of dance love! x

Hii, Iām Mia and Iām in my 3rd year of psychology but currently on placement (hence me being fairly MIA this yearš„²). The working life is pretty hectic so I CANNOT wait to be back in full swing with comps and socials next yearš¤Ŗ. Last year I was comp rep with the lovely Liv and this year Iāve been jazz rep and I thoroughly love being on a commitee which is as lovely and supportive as this one.
Izzy this year has been the most amazing first welfare rep and Iād love to carry on with some of the lovely ideas. For example, I love our well-ness Mondays on the Instagram and would carry this on further with themes such as sharing your favourite recipes, music, books, tv recommendations, skin care, places to walk, hobbies. We could even do live streams of things like yoga, stretching and mindfulness during especially stressful times of exam and deadline season (I know I could definitely benefit from not being such a stress headšš). I also would carry on the anonymous compliments and maybe do it more frequently. They really can brighten someoneās day and it highlights the love and support we have for each other in this society- I know it definitely puts a spring in my step if I ever get oneš„¹.
I would also use our Instagram page as a way to raise awareness of mental health. I would highlight where to go for professional mental health advice in the community but also within university. It may be especially difficult for freshers to know where seek out help when theyāre new to Leeds and the university. Iād also raise awareness of what to do if someone you know is struggling with mental health. Iād offer tips from professional sources to help you help others who are struggling. You are never alone in this societyš
I would also love to collab with social secs and do a few socials where money is being raised for charity. For example, thereās this place in Leeds which is like great British bake off. You get ingredients and instructions and have to bake something in a set time limit. Iād love to do something like this to raise money for charity but also to get to know each other more and work on teamwork. I know it can sometimes be daunting (especially for freshers), so would love to introduce more fun activities like this to get to know each other whilst doing it for a good causeāŗļø.
I also think doing more fundraisers throughout the year could be fun. For example doing things like an old clothes sale/clothes swap, book swaps, having raffles shows and comps, and our own leeds modern university challenge. I also think it would be nice to have more dance workshops from all different styles to help raise money. In our union there are sooo many dance styles and we should utilise that and get out our comfort zone and dabble in abit of Bhangra, K-pop or even vertical fitness!šš¼š§āāļø
Iād also love to collab with different societies such as gymnastics, cheer, netball, and ballet and do a swap of each otherās sports by teaching and taking part in different classes. These particular societies are mostly all female so could potentially involve a charity to do with womens rights or perhaps beat as eating disorders are also quite prevalent in those sports.
With that being said I would also love to invite the society as a whole to have a say in what charities we are going support. Iād love to hear about peoples passions and interests in particular charities or societies.
I believe I would be an approachable welfare rep because I am always up for a chat and a cup of coffee. My work this year has included a lot of mental wellness techniques with the children and Iāll be able to translate this to the role. My private Instagram will always be open to people who donāt feel like messaging the shared leeds modern page or emailing.
My main goal if I were lucky enough to be your welfare rep is to continue to encourage the supportiveness for each other. I love that leeds modern is like one big family and wouldnāt have it any other way- brb just cryingš„¹. I will always be there to listen to any problems you have and give you some motherly advice.
Sorry the rambling lol. Lots of dance love,
Mia xxxx
