Hello, I’m Polly and I am currently in my second year studying Environment and Business, and I am running to be one of your competition reps! I have been lucky enough to be a part of the modern comp teams since first year, competing in the contemporary competition team last year, and lyrical and jazz this year; alongside tap, jazz and lyrical classes. Being part of the competition teams has been such an amazing part of my university experience and I would love the opportunity to bring the same joy and excitement to comps next year. Steph and Emily did such a fab job this year and I have loved every second of comps, and was so honoured to be awarded Comp Angel at comp awards this year!
Throughout the comp season, I have identified some ideas that I would like to add/adapt if I was lucky enough to be elected (this is just a few, the full list put me over the word count!):
(1) Collaborating with backstage to add a technical element to bring the Leeds comp to the next level (as a backstage member this would be easy to implement).
(2) I would also like to make the comp more sustainable (but don’t worry I won’t be getting rid of comp t-shirts anytime soon- this isn’t Newcastle ahah)
(3) I would like to introduce a comp meal at the beginning of term, so members of each team can get to know each other outside the studio.
(4) The street dance bought such enjoyment to the comp season and I would like to see this return next year. Many people enjoyed learning a new style of dance, and so I would like to hold workshops for comp dancers to learn new styles. For example, I have a friend in DanceSport who would be happy running a couple of Latin and Ballroom workshops, as well as friends in societies such as SMS who may be willing to run musical theatre workshops. From these, I would like to create a wildcard dance.
Through working backstage at intercomp, and helping at Leeds comp, I was able to get a rounded overview of what goes into running a competition and so would feel confident when it came to organising Leeds comp. I especially loved interacting with other uni’s whilst helping out and I believe these communication skills will be key when it comes to reaching out and arranging comps. I am extremely organised and would gather information from a wide range of competitions to ensure we go to a good mix (I can guarantee a good spreadsheet will be involved).
People have described me as friendly and kind and I absolutely love meeting new people, so if elected I will ensure that all new members (comp or not) feel welcome in the society. Finally, I am a dedicated member of modern (apologies to the flat below me last year for my tapping in the shower!) and would love the opportunity to give back to the society that has played such an amazing part of my uni experience!
Thank you for considering me and I can’t wait for another year with Modern!

My name is Harriette and I would love to be considered for the role of competition rep.
I think I would be really suited to the role for a number of reasons. Firstly, in addition to all of the dance competitions our society have done this year, I have been to other dance competitions with the street dance society (the Go hard or go home Competition and Loughborough dance competition ). This gives me greater insight into choosing the competitions we will take part in for the year as well as giving me great guidance in the organisation and planning of the annual leeds dance competition. I can look back at how each of these competitions functioned and take note of what went well and what I should avoid which will aid the planning of our own competition.
Secondly, as you may already know, I choreographed the street dance competition routine in under a month (with the help of Rae) for the competition at DMU. For me, this mammoth task involved choreographing a whole dance, booking studio slots, organising and communicating with 24 people as well as sorting costumes and making sure who could attend what rehearsals. This demonstrates that I have strong organisation, communication teamwork and leadership skills all of which are vital for this role which is why I believe I am a strong candidate. I did all of that in such a short amount of time so I’m sure I could do even more for the society if I am given a whole year! Especially with organising the Leeds competition!
This also shows that not only will I be able to fulfill this role but it also shows that even as a fresher I have the attributes that would make me a valued member of the committee. I have shown that I am very efficient at working with a partner which demonstrates that it will be easy for me to work with my fellow comp rep on all of the tasks we must complete together. This also shows how much I would love to be able to choreograph any of the inter team routines!
As a committee member, I think I would be a valuable member as I feel that I am very approachable and friendly and so, for especially new freshers joining our society, I think I can be very welcoming because I have so recently been in their position so I can be there to reassure any of their concerns.
All the attributes I have mentioned above are all extremely useful for organising all of the dance competitions as well as our own.
I have already shown even prior to being on committee, that I am very devoted to this society and I will try my very best if I get this role. Modern Dance has been such a huge part of my first year at university so I would absolutely love the opportunity to be able to help run it.
I really hope you consider me for this role!

Hiya! I’d love to work as your comp rep this year as competitions were where I properly got to know everyone and felt like I truly became part of the modern dance family. It would be such a treat to be able to help out more and organise next year’s comps to do for others what Steph and Emily did for wee Rae :)
I’m not so great at tooting my own horn so I’ll just try tell you a bit about myself. I’ve been told I’m a fairly chill, chatty and optimistic person (the pun “Rae of sun” has followed me my whole life) which I hope makes me approachable and easy to talk to. I’m more than happy to chat and communicate with as many people as I can to make sure everyone’s happy and heard, and to get everything up and running smoothly.
I’m an art student which means I thrive off of being busy and using my spare time to piece things together to make a bit of magic happen! It also has its strengths, such as being able to DIY costumes for socials and being good at “thinking outside the box” and seeing things a bit differently. This comes in handy when navigating around problems and finding quick solutions (which will come in useful when facing the inevitable surprises that’ll crop up during comp season!).
I love working as a team and bouncing ideas about with others, as I did with Harrie when working on comp street. Through those 3 short weeks, we ate, slept and breathed that dance and it felt SO rewarding (and quite emotional) to see it all come together in the end after working under such time pressure. It completely grew my confidence in myself
and my organisational skills, allowing me to push myself not only in my uni work, but also to put myself forward for new jobs and roles like this. I would love the chance to work alongside someone again, along with the rest of committee, to organise even bigger things (with a bit more time!).
WHAT a comp season we’ve had this year! I bet we can continue this winning streak next year and take part in a good mix of competitions - some that give us a bit of a challenge (to make those victories even sweeter), but also many that allow us to snatch those trophies! I also think it’s fair to say that Leeds comp this year was a huge success and I would be honoured to walk in Steph and Emily’s footsteps to organise something equally (or if it’s possible, even more) amazing.
I’m sure that’s plenty from me, so I’ll leave you there. Whatever happens, I’m sure it’s gonna be an absolute belter of a year and I cannot wait for us to dance our way to the top!
LETS GO LEEDS DANCE LETS GO ❤️
