Hi, I’m Georgina and I am running to be one of your social secs! I’ve been part of Modern for two years now and my experience has been incredible with socials definitely having been one of my favourite parts (shoutout to Erin and Caitlin).
Dance really helped me settle in, enjoy uni life and make some of my closest friends. I would love to continue this and help especially welcome freshers the same way little anxiety filled me was helped by the friendliness of this society. So, my first point I would focus on is making freshers feel even more welcome than they do now. For example, I would propose starting off the year with a freshers only social to allow mingling without the usual pressure and chaos as we all know a Wednesday can be a lot (especially the rugby boys in Mischief!) I have also seen suggested the idea of Modern families which I would be really excited to have. And don’t worry although I will be making these events feel safer and more accessible, you’ll still be getting lots of rowdy drinking ;) including more late penalties so we can have those pres be as long as possible (I do have a punctuality award from modernmadness it would be wrong not to include this!)
Linking to this, in general, I’d love to create a safe, accessible environment through more sober opportunities for socialising and hopefully make this as popular as our Wednesday nights. I would love to work closely with our welfare sec to make these safe, secure and welcoming and help keep our mental health well especially over those stressful exam seasons I’m sure drop-in coffee sessions or activity breaks would be appreciated! There has also been suggestions of more active activities and I’d love to factor this in.
My main idea however is to make socials more led by you guys by creating some kind of forum through which you can anonymously suggest social ideas and things you want to see, possibly through a google form at the start of each term. I just want you to feel that the socials are what you want! This would be particularly useful in terms of sober socials so we can make sure there is enough interest and make them really worth your time.
Your voice would also be important in creating social awards. I have loved the use of the modernmadness Instagram this year by our social secs and would love to progress this further by making the social awards an end of each term event (possibly combining with a cheeky Akmal’s trip!). This award night would involve you guys voting for your favourite moments of the term which could turn into a great social idea! I will obviously keep the fortnightly social awards up and continue the great work of modernmadness as well as develop the tiktok so the whole world can see your great outfits!
Talking of outfits, we get to my ideas for some new social themes (heavily influenced by tiktok):
- White lies (or any writing on tshirts night)
- More socials with pairs as I loved our rhyme without reason this year (but maybe assigning partners to allow more socialising with new people)
- Children’s birthday party themed (a longer pres with all the alcohol to make those kids games even stupider)
- Cops and robbers (this is just an example of a theme that could make good games linked to it for pres! And also a good example of a joint social idea as these are always good)
Obviously, your ideas as mentioned above would be key to these social themes. Finally, to do with dress up I would love to do an Otley run as I’d love to incorporate my love (and far too much experience with them) with my love for Modern.
I really think I'd be great for this role as as well as (hopefully) being a friendly approachable face, I'm a bit of a nerd for time management and organising and would love to put this to good use!
Sorry that I’ve repeated myself a little with the poster but thanks for taking the time to consider me for one of the social sec positions and I'm so excited for what my next year in Modern will bring!
(I had so a nice format but here goes engage making this hard to read :( )

Hey guys, if I haven't already bumped into you at a social this year, my name’s Liv and I am running for one of the positions to be next years social sec. I’m a second year student studying BA Theatre and Performance with Enterprise and this year has been my first PROPER year in Modern Dance - in my first year of uni I was a member in the society but did not get involved with all the fun activities or comp teams. Therefore I know how daunting it can be to get involved with social activities when you don’t really know anyone else at the events.
Erin and Caitlin have done a fab job this year at organising our socials, as well as incorporating sober socials, collaborations with other societies and coming up with the weird and wackiest themes for a Wednesday night at Mischief! I would love to carry on with the same enthusiasm as these two have shown, ensuring that sober socials are still incorporated into the schedule (I’m thinking maybe a cheeky picnic at Roundhay Park, bowling, a trip to the theatre etc), society collabs are continued and the themes for a Wednesday night are a great laugh - did someone say white lie t shirt social?
I know how daunting it can be for freshers, or even returners who haven’t socialised that much with those in their allocated classes, to attend social events. Therefore I would like to introduce a social event at the beginning of the year (maybe a Terrace or Old Bar job) where members can sign up to be paired with another member and get to know each other so that it won’t be as scary attending the first Wednesday night out if they don’t know anybody else in the society yet or haven’t really spoken to anyone.
I’ve noticed this year that attendance for Wednesday night socials has dropped as we have neared the exam season, which also got me thinking of ideas that could help us studious lot over the dreaded period. Instead of a social around this time, we could organise a cinema trip or even a group study session with free coffee and tea to help support each other and keep up the positivity when it all gets a bit stressful.
A final idea I have had (thanks to Kim who gave me the inspiration) is an alumni social. This year a lot of our members are graduating that have been integral parts of Modern Dance over the years! I know some of these girls are very sad about leaving this chapter of their life behind, therefore I propose that at some point in the academic year (with much prior notice and planning) we host an alumni social where past members of Modern could come back to Leeds and come out for a meal with current members, and of course a cheeky night out, to reminisce on years gone by and find out what we have been up to in the mean time.
Without a doubt, the activities and experiences I have participated in this year with Modern have really made such a significant and positive difference to my second year of university. The friendships and memories I have created will stay with me going into the future and I will make many more if I am elected as a social sec next year. I hope that reading my manifesto, and a few of the ideas I have for next year, will encourage you to continue getting involved in the activities the society organises. Hopefully next year I will be given the opportunity to organise some of the events I have suggested for you. Thanks, Liv x

Hi guys, I’m Natasha. I am running for social sec. Since I joined the University of Leeds, I knew I wanted to be in the modern dance society. I am so glad I joined. When I first joined modern, I was very apprehensive, but I was put straight at ease by all the committee and made to feel extremely welcome. I would love to be able to meet all the new starters and make their university experience even better. I have met so many amazing people who I can’t wait to spend the next 2 years getting to know. I was able to attend multiple socials which allowed me to go out in new cities (the secret social), to meet the committee and to dress up which I love!
A few ideas I have to make next year even more fun.
• Sober socials are a must. The availability for sober social allow all modern dancer to attend a social that would make them feel most comfortable. These socials allow for people to learn more about the other members. Quiz nights would be a perfect addition to our current socials.
• A rounders day or other outdoor activities. We all love a little game of rounders in the summer. I think that this competitive type of social allows new members to be mixed in with the older members and creates a good sense of community.
• Joint society socials. This year I really enjoyed the socials with ballet and rugby union. These socials allowed us to meet more people within the university.
• Ensure that we continue our rituals of revs and mischief on a Wednesday and occasionally a fruity Friday. I also think a one of night where revs aren’t included to allow for a pres where people can get properly smashed and spend less money.
During freshers and the first semester of University I felt overwhelmed by constantly meeting new people. I want my focus as social sec be on the first semester for fresher to feel completely comfortable within the society providing them a safe haven to avoid the constant nights out with new people and trying to remember everyone’s name.
I have had the best time being a part of the modern dance society this year and I cannot wait to spend the next 2 years within this society. It allows me an escape for a few hours from university life. To be surrounded by people who have a common interest and who also care deeply for one another. Modern dance has provided a community of friends that are supportive at any time.
I would love to be social sec as I love meeting new people, having a cheeky night out (I do work in a bar after all) and a sober night in and in bed by 12. I want to be able to give everyone within the society the opportunity to attend a few social that makes them feel comfortable and to meet new people from different classes. I cannot wait to spend the next year with the people within this society.

Hey everyone, I’m Frankie and I’ll be running for the role of Social Secretary this year. If we haven’t seen each other in Open Tap then you’ve probably seen me at a Wednesday social! Being a part of Modern Dance has been the highlight of my first year at Leeds, so I would love to be involved in the committee so that I can help as many people enjoy what Modern Dance has to offer. I am an organised person with experience in roles similar to this (but I won’t bore you with a long list!) and have always loved coming up with crazy games at family parties which I’m hoping could come in handy at pres!
Many of you will know that I love a social and I definitely have Erin and Caitlin to thank for that! As a first year studying economics it has been amazing to be able to throw myself into a new group of people BUT it was definitely daunting. As Social Sec I would want to create events that ease people into the society meet ups so that they can benefit from everything that Modern Dance has to offer.
This coming year I would be keen to work alongside our Secretary to advertise all upcoming socials to help them run as smoothly as possible. By promoting our Modern Madness page through the main society Instagram, as well as incorporating the details in weekly emails, it would allow for everyone to access the information and make sure the whole society can meet up and have an amazing time! Having spoken to some of you, I know that there is quite a bit of interest for the tour to go ahead next year, so I would be keen to put a focus on this.
Caitlin and Erin have hosted so many amazing socials this year so I would be keen to carry on with the same momentum from the Otley Run to curry nights. Socials are organised for the societies members so I would be keen to help facilitate any ideas that you have. Here are a few activities I have in mind…
- Otley Run (pub name themed?)
- Karaoke night
- Cinema trips (who doesn’t love a musical?!)
- Christmas Pantomime Trip
- Belgrave Music Hall (the pizza is to die for)
- Joint Socials
- Coffee & Cake (potentially around exam season?)
- Bowling
- Paintball (I know how competitive we all are!)
Last year’s Social Secs have done the most amazing job at planning and running our events, I would love to have the opportunity to carry on their work as well as bringing a few new ideas to the role. I hope to be dragging you all along to revs and coffee shops with me next year and just want to say a massive thank you to everyone in the society for helping to make Modern Dance so welcoming and enjoyable- my first year in Leeds would not have been the same without you all!
