Hey everyone! My name’s Ella and I am suuuper excited to be running for show rep this year!!! If you don’t know me, I’m a 2nd year Criminal Justice and Criminology student and I have been a member of Modern Dance since I started university in 2021. I can honestly say Modern has made my time in Leeds 10x better, I have made some of my best friends through the society and everyone was literally so welcoming when I was a shy little fresher in first year! I can’t believe this will be my final year in the society, it’s actually gone toooo quick so I thought why not go out with a bang for my final year and apply to join our amazing committee!

I absolutely love the idea of the Modern showcase as it gives everyone the opportunity to show off their beautiful dancing, especially for the dancers who don’t compete to really give them the chance to shine!! It’s always such a fun time, learning all the dances and performing together and the hard work really pays off when you see it come to life on stage! As it currently stands, I wish to put on the usual showcase during semester 3 in mid-May time on Riley stage, highlighting every style and level of dance equally, along with the LUU March show dances and our amazing competition team routines!

However, if given the opportunity (time and budget dependent), I would love to put on another showcase earlier on, in first semester, around December time before we break up for the Christmas holidays, on Pyramid stage! I think this would be a brill opportunity to showcase more of our talent and give something to work towards in classes through Sept-Dec, but still doing technique and corner work alongside of course!!! My vision is to have the Winter showcase as a one night only type show and then put on the May showcase for two shows (potentially two nights OR a matinee and evening show, all being livestreamed of course!) as this gives the chance for more friends and family to come watch everyone perform, specifically for our leavers!

I don’t propose to do themes for the showcases as the LUU march show usually already has one and I feel like this can be quite limiting for choreography and routines, so our amazing teachers, Vicky and Erica can have free reign! I also think to give the opportunity for anyone in the society the potential chance to perform solos, duets or trios in the showcase is a vital aspect to add some variety into the running order. Obviously, it is not doable for absolutely everyone to perform their own routines and it may be bittersweet, but by sending a video of your routine to committee, this gives everyone an equal chance + no scary auditions! As we all know, the talent across all dance societies at Leeds Uni is insane and I would also love to incorporate a few dances from other societies into our showcases, highlighting modern’s inclusivity and support towards the other dance societies.

I pride myself in being really organised and time efficient (even if I seem a bit all over the place sometimes) and I love to overplan my life lol so I think I would definitely be able to handle organising the shows alongside my third-year studies, by liaising with backstage society, our committee members and teachers but also keeping all society members in the loop! Finally, I will make sure I communicate with our costume & merch rep to put everyone in unreal costumes suitable for each routine! I would absolutely love this opportunity to follow in Kirsten’s footsteps and be more involved in LUU’s best dance society! Thanks for reading my manifesto girlies! Dance love, Ella xxx
