Hi, I’m Nathaniel (he/him), I’m a first year Mechanical Engineering student. I play French horn in Sinfonia, Symph, and Concert Band and spend as much of my week as possible in Old Bar post rehearsal (pub??). I think I would make a great social sec because: I’ve had a year on committee as first year rep and so have a good understanding of how the society is run; I’ve got lots of ideas for potential socials to help make the society more integrated; I’m always open to suggestions and feedback, and I realise the importance of both drinking and sober socials and that no matter the situation, sobriety is always welcomed and encouraged. As a 2nd-year music student involved in our vibrant community, I'm excited to put myself forward for this role. This past year has been transformative for me as I've had the opportunity to connect with musicians across our various ensembles, creating friendships that extend far beyond rehearsal rooms and performance spaces.

Getting to know people from different groups has honestly been one of the highlights of my uni experience. It's given me a real appreciation for the variety of talents and personalities that make our music society unique. From post-rehearsal pub trips to socials and formal events, some of my favourite memories have come from just spending time together outside of rehearsals.

I’d love for everyone to have the chance to build these kinds of connections. I care about creating welcoming spaces where musicians from all backgrounds and ensembles feel comfortable and included. I’ve always enjoyed bringing people together, ensuring no one feels left out, and adding positive energy to the room. I would also make it a priority that newcomers and freshers feel welcomed and included from the start as I know firsthand how intimidating it can be to join a close-knit group.

I greatly enjoy organising events where people can unwind, have fun, and get to know each other. I know everyone has different preferences when it comes to socialising - some love a crazy night out, while others might prefer a cozy craft evening, or a quiz/game night. If I were Social Secretary, I’d aim to put together a mix of events so there’s something for everyone.

Spending time with people across different music groups has given me a good feel for what kinds of events people enjoy and how to help create spaces where real connections can grow. I’ve seen how these friendships can make a big difference—not just socially, but in how we collaborate and support each other musically too.

I really believe that making music with others should be enjoyable, uplifting, and good for our wellbeing. The social side of our community plays a big role in that—it brings us closer, makes collaborations more meaningful, and helps create a space where people feel supported and comfortable. That’s why I’d love the opportunity to take on this role. I’d bring energy, creativity, and genuine care to help make our society not just a place to make music, but a place where real friendships grow, and everyone feels part of something special.
