Hi, I’m Oli (affectionately known as Olibean, McBean or, simply, Bean) and I’d love to be your next LUUMS Events Secretary. I’ve had a long history of involvement with events, helping with my mum’s work events from age eight or nine. I embraced this passion of hers, leading the organisation of my Year 13 Prom for me and 215 of my classmates. Being at an event that was all down to my hard work was one of the highlights of my time at school, and I’d love to be able to do it all again this year on an even larger scale!
Since joining LUUMS in 2023, I’ve been a member of all three choirs, picking up managing Symphonic Choir in February ’24, a role which I was eager to bring with me into my second year of study. In December of this year, I joined exec, taking on the role of Wellbeing and Inclusivity Officer. In the space of 18 months, I’ve seen LUUMS as a member, a manager and an exec member, meaning I have a good scope on how to get everyone involved in events that will help them make the most out of our society.
As your Events Secretary, I want to continue to prioritise accessibility to LUUMS events. This would materialise both in the form of accessible prices and payment plans, as well as early announcements of dates and transparency about event progress, ensuring as many people can attend as possible. I have always loved the idea of the ‘Survivors Breakfast’ after an event like Ball – my parents talk frequently about six am bacon sandwiches after their formals. I would look at introducing this for those who want to keep the party going as long as possible.
In LUUMS Week of Fun I would love to work closely with the Social Secretary to introduce some new events. A LUUMS-wide Taskmaster Day (based off the hit show Taskmaster) has always appealed to me; I think it would be great fun to take over the School of Music with (responsible) silliness. Week of Fun would also be great opportunity to work with the Social Secretary after a year of carving out the intricacies of how these two new roles work alongside each other, a task I am looking forward to.
On top of the usual calendar of Events and Socials, 2026 is also LUUMS’ 100th Anniversary, and I would love to work with the rest of exec on a celebration of a magnificent size. I would love to host events for both current members and alumni, including a second ball or party as well as a gala concert in the summer, in a larger external venue where we would be able to celebrate and showcase the amazing century of music making in one of Leeds’ oldest societies.
