Hi everyone, I’m Amelia and I would love to be your dance rep next year!

I have been part Modern Dance since my first year competing with the tap and lyrical teams and I have loved every minute of it. This year I have been lucky enough to choreograph for one of the tap teams which is a role I have 100% taken and ran with which I hope has been an example of how committed I am and shown that I am a team player.

In my second year I joined Irish dance society as a beginner which provided a whole new perspective of dance societies by putting myself in beginners’ shoes (literally). The experience within dance societies can be vastly different between levels which is why ensuring every member feels welcome and included is so vital. As a student that commutes from home to uni every day, I truly understand how important dance societies are for our own wellbeing by providing friendship and relief from the pressures of uni life (although they can also come with their own set of pressures). Not only would I want to maintain communication with the presidents/committee of each of the societies but also with their members to ensure their experience with Leeds Dance is the best it can be.

Intercomp and LUU show are obviously a massive component to this role on top of dance ball, providing an opportunity for all dance societies to come together as one and support each other. Previous dance reps have done a wonderful job ensuring these events are only full of encouragement of everyone involved which I would love to continue, I know from my own experience these events can be the highlight of the year. There is an incredible amount of work into planning and organising these events to make them the best they can be, and it really excites me to potentially be the one to organise them.

I would love to bring some new things to the role maybe through encouraging more collaborations through the dance societies in charity events. Dance societies could work together to produce a combined dance with other societies of a completely different style for example Modern with Salsa. These dances could be showcased as a small competition where the audience votes for their favourite partnership, raising money through tickets, raffles etc. Not only would this benefit charities, but it would also build relationships between the societies.

Dance has been the best part of my uni experience; I don’t think I would have made it this far without it. Being the representative for dance next year would be an incredible opportunity to follow on from the incredible job Claire has done this year, and I can’t wait for another year full of dance.
